It's actually ok with both canned or dry.

The advice I've received is that it's good to mix things up with kittens because that will prevent them from imprinting on one particular food. It sometimes becomes necessary to switch foods and that's more difficult if they're only eating one thing.

Another reason for variety is that they're going to get different levels of nutrients from different things. That's why I've decided to expand my girls' diet to include different meats.

The flip side of this is that some cats are less tolerant of dietary changes. Some don't have any problems, but others suffer digestive upsets if their food is changed too quickly. In these cases you want to introduce new foods slowly. Let the cat get used to them and once they do, you can start mixing things up.

You shouldn't feed any dry at all at any time. canned foods without gravy is best and you can switch around if you want

Nutrition since there are so many bad things out there is very important to your cat’s health
Contrary to what you may have heard; dry foods are not a great thing to feed a cat.
Please read the label on what you are feeding? What are the ingredients? Do you know what they mean? Is the first ingrdiant a muscle meat like chicken or meal or other things?

Dry foods are the number 1 cause of diabetes in cats as well as being a huge contributing factor to kidney disease, obesity, crystals, u.t.i’s and a host of other problems. Food allergies are very common when feeding dry foods. Rashes, scabs behind the tail and on the chin are all symptoms
The problems associated with Dry food is that they are loaded with carbohydrates which many cats (carnivores) cannot process them. Also, Most of the moisture a cat needs is suppose to be in the food but in
Dry, 95% of it is zapped out of dry foods in the processing. Another thing, most use horrible ingredients and don't use a muscle meat as the primary ingredient and use vegetable based protein versus animal. Not good for an animal that has to eat meat to survive.
You want to pick a canned food w/o gravy (gravy=carbs) that uses a muscle meat as the first ingredient and doesn't have corn at least in the first 3 ingredients if at all. Fancy feast is a middle grade food with 9lives, friskies whiskas lower grade canned and wellness and merrick upper grade human quality foods. Also, dry food is not proven to be better for teeth. If the food is a high quality canned food such as Wellness and Innova, it is fine to change it up so your cat doesn't get bored. Wellness is grain free and no animal by-product.

Unfortunately with low quality food such as Friskies, Science Diet, 9Lives, Fancy Feast you will result in tummy problems because of all the fillers. The grain is what really upsets tummies.

I would stick to shuffling around flavors within the brand if you choose to feed a low quaility food, but you should be fine with switching up high quality brands.

Dry food must be transitioned slowly. Some people just switch it, but most cat's tummies are not that strong.

EDIT: To sharon w repsonse: I do read the lables on commercially sold treats such as Greenies and Temptations and that is why I don't feed them to my cat. Yes, they are all about the same, but they are all BAD. I give them high quality dry food as a treat. I just get sample bags or small bags of high quality foods to offer as a treat. Because my cats are not used to the fillers and crap in the treats and low quality foods, they will actually get very ill if I feed them the treats sold in stores.

Yes, it is OK. Mine usually prefers to stick with Friskies "Special Diet", but occasionally, I'll find a flavor of Sheba or Fancy Feast that "Mr. Finicky" likes. And, just WHY would it NOT be OK with the dry food? I do it. My "Snowman's" (pure white Turkish Angora--hence, the name) regular dry food is Friskies Dental Diet. But, since there is only ONE kind of cat treat that he will eat (Greenies--Salmon flavor), for treats, I switch between the Greenies, Meow Mix, Tender Vittles, other dry kinds, and we never have any kind of stomach issues, loose stools or constipation or any other thing. Don't know where you heard this, but---do a little label reading of the ingredients---they're all about the same.

It is usually better to stick with one brand once you have found the one they like, because they will up-chuck what they eat if you keep changing brands. We have one cat that doesn't tolorate any kind of canned food.

I do,..my cats like variety.
How else would I know what they prefer and will readily eat?
I'm sure others would say not to, but it's awfully boring eating the same food and NOT able to have a choice!

Every time you change their diet their digestive system has to adjust to the change. Its very difficult for a young animal, they do somewhat better as they get older.

I change every day. I have 2 that are fat but they are all healthy.
but feed them cat food because of the high fat content.
cats need fat.How lucky are they but it is true because of their metabolism. they need fat.
the cat food brand does not matter.

I do because my finicky kits seem to prefer variety. If it's something new, they eat it up.
