i would like to get a dslr camera for myself, i think thanksgiving sales might be a good time to look for one.

There should probably be some deals on the entry level DSLRs... like the D40 or Canon Rebel XTi. Of these I would opt for the D40 as its a better build quality than the entry level Canons. Usually (for point and shoots) the cameras that go on sale are the crummy ones.
