i do put my hand over my heart i do not sing the song...i find it amazing how many people talk and are totally disrespectul while it plays

edit: actually i think we are all wrong ...this link says you are to salute..i personally do not..my husband stands at attention the entire time as he is active duty in the air force...i personally have never seen anyone salute from the beginning note to the last..

The Pledge of Allegiance and National Anthem
The pledge of allegiance should be rendered by standing at attention, facing the flag, and saluting.
When the national anthem is played or sung, citizens should stand at attention and salute at the first note and hold the salute through the last note. The salute is directed to the flag, if displayed, otherwise to the music.

As an adult female my answer is this ( are you supposed to put you hand over your heart during the National Anthem (there is no written rule) however it is a sign of support and love and respect for our country since it is our National Anthem. Everyone has their own thoughts and theories on this topic if Obama wasn't running for President it never would have been an issue. On the other hand one would think he would at least show more "allegiance" when out in public. That is just one voters view.

YES!!!

Being retired military this is one of my biggest pet peaves.

Put your right hand over your heart. If you have a hat on take it off, holding onto the bill of the hat hold it over your heart. Stand straight (kindof like a military person at attention) also face the flag while the song is being played. If you don't see one then face the direction that one is most likely flying. And DON'T talk. If you're not going to sing, at least move your lips.

you are to cover your heart only if the flag is present, no matter if it is the pledge or the anthem, if you are military you are to be at attention. If no flag is present, you do not have to cover your heart but look in the direction of where the flag is, I still cover my heart even if I can't see it with my right hand.

t really doesn't matter where you put your hand during the National Anthem or the Pledge of Allegiance. It's what you are thinking that really matters.

But you definitely are not allowed to put your hand on the butt of the person next to you. I found that out the hard way.

Whenever I go to a baseball game, everyone puts their hand over their heart. If they're wearing a basball cap, they have to take it off.

That's what I've seen.
