I have two of them who are lovely! One died recently so I only have one now, And have had several in previous years. I was walking in the park and my dog was sniffing at a tree , ( off the lead) and another dog ran over and started sniffing the same spot! Thats all they were doing, Hardly aknowledging eachother. And Some ignorant man starts screaming at his dog to come over, then shouting at me , THAT THINGS DANGEROUS ANIMAL!! SHOULDN'T BE OUT IN DAYLIGHT PUT IT ON THE LEAD! ,,,I was incredibly offended! Shes lovley and wouldnt harm a fly!!

I agree with whoever said The thign about beign racist. JUDGIGN A DOG ON ITS BREED IS LIKE JUDGING A PERSON ON THEIR SKIN TONE. Thinknig that My dog will attack you becasue Shes a pit is the same as thinking A middle eastern man ealking down the street is a terrorist!

I agree with you. They aren't allowed much places around here wihtout being on a lead- while other dogs get to trot around them off-lead. It's just plain wrong. It's like I've said a million times...judging the dog b/c of its breed is like judging someone for their skin color or national origin...it's wrong and sensless. I wouldn't worry about that guy...coninue to do a good job on your pit and continue to try to educate people on the TRUE nature of loved and properly raised pits...that's all we can do. and if it takes proving them wrong one person at a time...then I'm willing to do so! I hope you and your BEAUTIFUL pit continue to have fun at the park!
NICK W: I've heard of people being attacked by yorkie, poodles and yes LABRABORS!!! (oooohhhh no!) it's just not given as much media attention as PIT BULL'S (not bc its NOT happening...happens more than you might know...try looking it up before you say something about it)

The suggestion of an obedience class is an excellent one. Read here https://tr.im/dupnI
It will help your dog learn to behave around other dogs, and help keep your training moving forward as you'll want to be prepared for the next class. Also, a good instructor can be a wonderful resource, someone to help you with any questions or concerns about your dog. Leash training can take a LOT of time and patience, depending upon the dog. I'm not sure what you mean by 'horrible on a leash' but my basic suggestion is that you take a lot of yummy treats with you on walks. When your dog behaves well on the leash (not pulling) praise her and give her treats. Change direction a lot so that she learns to pay attention to YOU and where you are going. It's also helpful to teach a "Watch Me" command such that whenever your dog looks at you you praise her and give her a treat. About chewing, yes a Kong is a great chew toy. Some dogs also like Nylabone brand bones. I suggest also teaching a "Leave It" command. You use this when she shows interest in chewing on something she shouldn't. Then immediately give her something she is allowed to chew, such as the Kong stuffed with somethig yummy. This same command will be helpful on walks when she wants to sniff or eat something she shouldn't. Again, when she does leave the item alone, be sure to give lots of praise. I would look into an obedience class right away. I think that you'll find that a good obedience class can help enormously! Good luck and enjoy your new dog.

actually i "was" 1 of those people. scared of the "stigma" that goes with owning a pitbull. my son was looking at the local animal shelter for a dog any dog he didnt care just wanted a dog. so after many, many, many dogs.he showed up with a pit bull mix ( she looks just like a pure bred) I was scared to death he was 21 and just had moved back home. i already had a lab golden retriever mix. point is they get along very well, and my lab mix is the mean one not the pit. the lab has nipped and ripped and actually gotten to a few legs. so i have to put her away when company comes. the pit is sweet but i just bought my first home and my homeowners insurance is twice as high because of the pit . i do understand the fear in people . a lot of people have been hurt by this breed BUT< i have had this girl from a pup and she is sweet i absolutely believe it is in how they are raised.also until we could find a strong enough chain to walk her on she escaped a few time lol but,,,, the kids in the neighborhood brought her back . they couldnt do that if she was mean.

Yes i do!! Pit bulls are known for being soppy little things as long as they are brought up properly! I have only ever known ONE aggressive pit and that was down to the fact she had a medical problem and once that was taken care of she became a lovely dog!
Many people also think Rottweilers, Staffys, German Shepherds and Irish Wolfhounds are ''Vicious, evil and should never be owned as a pet!!'' to quote one person i know!
The only time a dog is evil or vicious is if they are either in pain or the owner has taught them to be - neither of which is the dogs fault! Personally i would love a Pit Bull of my own i just dont have the time or space for another dog yet!

i think they get a very bad press.the trouble is ,people are ignorant, and believe what they read in the papers, and the press(English)had a great time destroying the image of these dogs 15 years ago.It was a proper witch-hunt,with daily pictures of snarling dogs.it was enough to make the govt give a knee-jerk reaction and ban them.Ours was only 5 weeks old then, but instead of putting him down,we got him 'made legal'(tattooed,micro-chipped and castrated) and we had 14 good years with him.He was the BEST dog i ever owned, and we all (family, friends)miss him.he loved people, kids, other dogs, but had an uncanny ability to sniff out a 'bad un'.local thieves/drug users who came near the house were given the 'tough dog' approach, and always gave us /our house a wide berth! . I see on you-tube there seems to be a campaign to get rid of them in the USA...i really hope this doesn't come about,it would be a great loss.

I hate the way Chavs dress them up in chains studs and leather as if they are a member of a Village People tribute band,
Dogs are like people treat em mean and they act accordingly give em love and affection and they should return it, but not always.
Even Hitler was a cute bouncing baby boy at one stage in his life! And the meanest fighting Pitbull was once a cutiepie puppy.
If YOU know your dog then you will know whether it is safe off the lead

This is a little off topic, but the new Old Navy commercial has an adorable little black pit bull puppy in it... Good for them.. I think it's about time a company shows a pit as the cute dog in the commercial... maybe it'll raise awarness..... maybe (don't hold your breath though)
EDIT:
To purple, I encourage you to check out the website
www.understand-a-bull.com, click on the link on the left hand side that says all dogs bite... you'd be surprised how many "lovely" breeds that wouldn't hurt a fly ended up mauling another animal or oops a person.... everyone should check out this site

How would a stranger know that she is a lovely dog?? Need to keep in mind that the breed does have a reputation, deserved or not.
Remember too that there is a valid reason why "those people" pick the breed of dog that they do, and that is the breeds "predisposition".
While it is socialization that will determine what the dogs actual disposition will be, because of it's predisposition it is easier for "those people" to make a Pit mean than it is to make other breeds mean.
Same reason that I choose retrievers to hunt ducks, hounds to chase rabbits, and heelers to herd cattle. If I wanted to train a dog to kill people I would choose a pit, it is just easier to train them to do so than it is most other breeds.

I have a pit and i know what you mean they passed anti pitt laws in my city so it was move or may more than my rent in liablity insurance to keep a dangerous animal. Dangerous animal ? Shes harmless acctually afraid of other dogs and loves all people. So I am luck that my mother lives in the country and we moved. I live in a great town where they dont have preconcived notions about pits my neighbors dont fear her or any of my other So called Vicous dog breeds but they watch my beagle she has nabbed many pant legs in her 10 years. I am geting ready to move into my own house and but bet your bunns ill get another. Dedicated responsible owners are the only thing standing between these dogs and closed minded ignorant people. We all have to remember its not our job to change their minds its our job to change the laws that want to tkae our dogs away!! The fightng has to stop these are living animals but we have to ask ourselves If people fought little ankle bitters would we be passing laws to bann them too ? Whats next ?

I agree with Tom L. The breed is known for its aggressiveness towards other animals, that is what they are bred for.
As far as it all being in how you raise them, BS, it is a genetic issue. I have nothing against the breed, just the owners who try to deny their dogs genetics and try to make them out to be angels. A properly bred pit will fight, not because it was trained to by someone, because it was ALLOWED to, there is a huge difference there!!
