being properly hydrated will help to allow normal metabolic function. so the recommended 8 glasses of water is basically for the average sedentary individual. athletes and those that exercise on a daily basis, will need substantially more than 8 glasses. those that live in hot and humid areas will also have a higher daily requirement of water. so the time of year, ambient temperature, relative humidity, amount of muscle mass, type of daily exercise, job, etc. are all factors when determining the daily water requirements. in general men require more water than women as they typically have more muscle mass to support.
when muscle cells are dehydrated they can not not operate properly so this will decrease fatty acid oxidation as they are normally 75% water. when the body is dehydrated waste materials can not be properly transported through the body and eliminated.
to be technical only drinks that contain zero calories would be considered part of the water intake. liquids that contain calories are considered "food" to the body and will cause digestive enzymes to be released.

Drinking eight glasses of water a day is very difficult which leads me to believe that you do not need to take in that much water. Yes, any liquids count towards liquid intake, water of course is best for health, however, coffee is also a diuretic (making you go to the bathroom more) so in fact depletes you of some of the fluid in your body. Fruit juices and tea are also good (decaffeinated). The water itself will not help you lose weight except to make you feel more full and stop you eating so much. Calories in and calories out, diet and exercise are the only things that count when trying to lose weight. Remember fruit juices contain a lot of sugar. Pop should be decaf. & sugar free though I don't like the artificial sweeteners for health reasons. My favorite drink is 1/2 glass low cal cranberry juice mixed with 1/2 glass of seltzer water (or any other fruit juices mixed with sparkling water).

no, unfortunately the coffee does not count... lol but that would be nice!!! drinkning 8 galsses of water a day is healthy and helps to remove antioxidants from your body and when racticed with a good excersice and diet plan you will def. lose weight. If you drink a tall glass before each meal, maybe 15-20 minutes before, youwill eat less as your body already has a sense of being partially full. Good luck and I hope this helps.

This is a great question. I have been batterling weight since I had my daughter and that was about 4 years ago. I went to Weight Watchers and water does promote weight loss. It helps flush your body of fat and waste. Excercise also helps in loosing weight. Not only that but when you eat right and start to loose, excecise keeps you from sagging because you'll be toning your body as the weight comes off.
Now the coffee question. The rule is that for every cup of cofee you drink, you must drink 2 cups of water, unless you are drinking decafe. I am not sure of the scientific reason as to why. I have been drinking a lot of green tea instead of coffee, and now, I don't even miss it!
Best wishes!

Coffee does NOT count as your water for the day. If that were the case you could count most drinks as they all contain some amount of water. Pure water is good because it helps replace what you naturally lose throughout the day. You notice a weight loss initially when you start replacing things such as soda with water, because you are losing the excess water weight that your body was storing in itself.
Yes it can be a very large factor, but as you said, needs to be combined with some amount of excercise, and not necessarily DIET but healthy eating.

Yes, because your body requires water to carry out metabolism and for many other functions. So, it comes to no surprise why you would be losing weight, because the body is able to carry out more metabolic functions than before.
Coffee doesn't count because caffeine is a diuretic, meaning, it takes water out. So, it actually makes you more dehydrated which you don't want. Same goes for soda. Also, just a heads up, decaf still has caffeine in it, very small amount, but it's still there.

Actually, coffee has a negative effect on your water count. You should definitely continue your effort--not only will that amount of water help you lose weight, but your skin will also look better. Good luck!

Hi. i too have an addiction. i love coffee! but it cannot be a counted as a glass of water becuase it dehydrates you (similarly to alcohol) more than it hydrates you! i think that if you drink alot of water you probably won't be eating when you didnt need to before. also you're totally wasing out your system so that'll be cool. i was veggie for a year and upped my water intake and i've never felt better. keep up the water if not for weightloss for yourself and you health and my ability to rhyme! take care x

8 glasses is good for health and flushing out your body, but will not dramatically promote weight loss. Maybe only a small effect
