No one has located this exact thing in Voltaire's writings, but he did say something similar about defending what someone else wrote. Nevertheless, he is credited with it.

No, he didn't. The quote originated with Evelyn Hall's book Friends of Voltaire, which was published circa 1900. She described how Voltaire defended a writer despite disagreements using word to a similar effect.
