Yes- the beans aren't the most important thing, it's the flavor and cooking- my grandmother used dried lima beans!
Here is one recipe, it's pretty basic but I would add some molasses if you like baked beans to be sweet:
BAKED KIDNEY BEANS
2 reg. size cans kidney beans
1/2 c. granulated sugar
1 scant c. ketchup
1 green pepper, diced
2 med. onions, diced
1 1/2 lb. bacon
Fry bacon and add to the above ingredients. Put in baking dish and bake for 2 hours at 350 degrees

I know people that have done this. Use a standard baked beans recipe and sub for the kidney. flavor will remain the same the texture will be the only difference.(the beans are bigger)
baked beans in the slow cooker
INGREDIENTS
3 cups dry navy beans, soaked overnight or boiled for one hour
1 1/2 cups ketchup
1 1/2 cups water
1/4 cup molasses
1 large onion, chopped
1 tablespoon dry mustard
1 tablespoon salt
6 slices thick cut bacon, cut into 1 inch pieces
1 cup brown sugar
DIRECTIONS
Drain soaking liquid from beans, and place them in a Slow Cooker.
Stir ketchup, water, molasses, onion, mustard, salt, bacon, and brown sugar into the beans until well mixed.
Cover, and cook on LOW for 8 to 10 hours, stirring occasionally if possible, though not necessary.
This can be done on the stove top just cut the cooking time. I hope this helps. I have subbed other beans too.

Sure you can. They'll taste a little different than baked beans, but it's barely noticeable. Just get a recipe for baked beans and use kidney beans as the beans. If you get canned kidney beans you'll need to drain and rinse them very well before you start cooking them. Don't have a recipe for you, but I know the basic ingredients for baked beans include molasses, brown sugar, water, and whatever spices you like. The Food TV Network has a huge variety of recipes, so I'd recommend starting there (http://www.foodtv.com/)

First of all, the popular baked bean, those in tins are not kidney beans, they are actually Haricot beans. But here's a recipe for home baked beans.
Ingredients.
three tablespoons of olive oil
3 medium chopped onions
4 garlic cloves
2 teaspoons of paprika,
half teaspoon ground cloves
three heaped tablespoons tomato ketchup
250 ml passata
300 ml water
2 cans haricot beans drained
1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon soft brown sugar.
Method.
1. Heat oil in a large ovenproof pan. Add the onions and garlic and fry until soft and golden. Sprinkle over the paprika and ground cloves and cook for 1 minute then stir through the ketchup.
2. Add the passata and water and bring to the boil. Simmer for about 10 minutes befor liquidizing until smooth.
3. Pre-heat oven to 150 c gas, dunno what electric equivalent is.
4. Add the beans, worcestershire sauce and sugar to the tomato sauce, season with salt and pepper if desired, stir well and bring back to boil.
5. Put on a lid and transfer to the oven for about 1 hour and 30 minutes or thereabouts. Stir in some boiling water before serving if the beans are a bit too dry.

RE:
Can I make homemade baked beans with kidney beans?
It´s hard to find baked beans in stores here in Germany, so I must compromise.
How would I make kidney beans taste like baked beans?

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.
They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!
This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.
It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.

Never tried this, but it sounds super yummy! I wonder if the lentils will need more time to soak? It would suck if some of the beans take longer than others.
