my cats sit in the windows and make strange noises at birds,.... why???

They are not singing, they are talking:

My ex wife's cat used to do that. He would imitate the birds chirps to get them closer to him. Then he would pounce on them and kill them. He was constantly bringing dead birds to the back door.

first time I have heard of a cat singing at the birds!...maybe its inviting them to dinner?!

They try to lure the birds closer by trying to sound like them.

they want to hunt. my cats do that just before they get a bird or a mouse....
