we want to plaster a room in our house.would it be cheaper for us to strip the room back to the walls and skip the rubbish then get a quote from a plasterer.Or tell him what we are going to do then get the quote.

If you had a plasterer come in to give you a quote, he might 'pad' the estimate a little to cover him in case he discovers something difficult in the walls.

However, if you clear out all the old debris, he knows exactly what work is involved and can examine the structure first.

He will probably be happy to discuss his preferences with you when you call to schedule an estimate. He might be willing to give you an estimate 'as is', and then to review it after you remove the old plaster -- to cover you both. If it looks better than expected, you win... if it's worse, then at least you both go in with clear expectations.

He might also want to see the place intact first, so that he has an idea of what you want it to look like later. It would also help him identify the sources of damage (settling?) that you might want to remedy before spending all the money on a remodel that will crack later.

he will ask you the size of the room ..does it include the ceiling ..any obstructions etc ..it wont make any difference to the price if you strip it first ..but ..if hes any good then he may be able to pva the walls and just skim them

Contact the plasterer first, you may not need to take the walls back, they may only need skimming.
