My boyfriend and I are living in Washington, DC at the moment but we are so tired of this area. My boyfriend is a singer and was signed with Sony Urban when he was going back and forth from DC to NY but the deal fell through.

We are thinking of moving to New Jersey... possibly the Jersey City area or the Bergenfield area... somewhere close to NYC but not directly in the city cause it is too expensive to live there. How much on average would a two bedroom apartment cost us monthly in these areas of New Jersey?

I have looked on Craigslist and sublet.com and they are not that expensive, but i was wonderind how much it would be to go through an actual rental property. My boyfriend and I make a combined income of about $80,000 right now. How bad of a blow would this be to us?

I forgot to mention that we are moving to Jersey so that he can get back to his music career rather than having to make the long 4 hour commute back and forth to NY

Also, would it be ideal for me to find a job in Jersey or try for working in NY?

♥ Well I live in Clifton [[less than 20 min from Jersey City]]. The apartment price really depends on the area. Two bedrooms cost anywhere from $1000-$2000 or higher. Most I've seen are more in the range of the $1000-$2000 I mentioned though. :-) Buying a house has many advantages over renting an apartment. If you can afford $1000-$2000 for an apartment, just buy a house and you'll be paying around the same thing. And you'll own it. There is work readily available in NJ so I dont think you'd have trouble finding a job. Good Luck!

The least expensive cities to live in may not be cities you want to live in. Elizabeth, Newark, etc. Spend some time on this forum. Also, have you given thought as to how you are going to get a work visa? This is not as simple as saying I'm going to go the US and get a job. Unless you plan on coming to school here and even that gives you limited time to work here. This is a good start, ask questions, but I suggest you read some of the forums here and do a bit more research. Good luck.

Just my advise but if you are moving within commuting distance to New York, look into buying instead of renting. It's a buyers market right now. Of course only consider this if you are sure your relationship is solid.

"$80000 you will be comfortable in NJ . taxes are high. I sold my Brgen County house and moves out west. better taxes rates out here. but NJ is good for his industry.
look a purchasing houses are soft now and you can make a bundle in 2 years if you want to move again. Avoid Jersey city. You will llike Brgenfeild and Dumont better anyway.
Good luck
Happy Holiday

It may be a buyers market, But it will be nearly impossible for first time buyers to get a mortagage.
