We are going to Magic Kingdom tonight to see the holiday lights and the Spectromagic light parade. I want to take good pictures without carrying a lot of equipment. It will be night, and I will be taking shots of lights and moving lights as well as shots around the park. Here's what I have:

Nikon D80 with three lenses:
AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 DX SWM ED
AF Nikkor 50mm 1:1.4 D
AF-S Nikkor 18-200mm 1:3.5-5.6 DX SWM VR ED IF

The latter is my preferred lens for walking around, but I only have the built-in flash, and the long lens casts shadows. The 50mm is best for low light and motion, but I also plan to take close-up shots, which the stationary lens doesn't allow for. The first lens is OK for regular use, but it's slow in low light. However, I'll be taking photos of lights, so will this compensate for the low light surroundings?

Two questions: What lens should I use, and on what settings? I need help as soon as possible on this one!

I need to add that I'm still learning the ropes with this camera, and I'm not very good with manual settings. I tend to use the automatic settings, which on this camera include portrait, landscape, macro, action, night landscape, and night portrait.

I appreciate the answers so far. I want to improve my skills, but for now I just want to get good pictures **tonight**. I can't go out and buy new equipment right now, so I need to use what I have to its best advantage. That's where I need help. I've set my ISO up higher and I've decided to take the long lens and the 50mm. I can't take a tripod, so I'll have to make do with what I have. Any additional thoughts or advice would be appreciated!

Take the 50mm f1.4 and the 18-200mm since it has VR since it has Vibration Reduction.

ISO 800 should be sufficient but 1200 or 1600 are good options. Be sure the Noise Reduction setting is on with the higher ISO settings.

IMO use the 18-200 lens and a 800 or 1600 film. Works like a dream in my case- I use a Canon T70 and a 35-280 lens

Take one lens the 50mm 1:1.4

Don't take a long lens for night shots at Magic Kingdom. You need a wide angle lens that gets a lot of view and that you can get up close.

The light is bad at night and you can't light up large areas with your flash.

Get a camera bag and portable flash unit. Also you won't learn anything by using the automatic settings. If you really want to improve your photgraphic talent, use the manual settings. This will force you to learn what to do in certain situations. If the pic turns out bad, you can chimp it and delete it. Also, for low light situations you need a 2.8 lens or faster. they are more expensive, but are well worth their value in the lighting you are shooting in.

18-200. You have nothing wider so might as well go for the lens with most range. The VR will take care of the low light.

Put your camera on AUTO unless you know what you're doing.

Will paintings yet now not with autofocus, as to the cruciality of autofocus, that relies upon thoroughly on you and your taking photos innovations. i like it, yet have completed the instruction manual concentration factor interior the previous too. My sugestion is to ascertain if there is an AF-s version of this lens quite of the AF version you element out. Then it could have autofocus on your digicam. it somewhat is perchance going to fee better inspite of if it is going to likely be nicely worth it. Heck you saved quite by potential of procuring the D40 now not the D80 besides. F-supply up
