Great answer! All dogs have a pedigree even the mutts. Its just the purebreds that usually have the papers. Every animal or person came from somewhere. That's your pedigree.

A pedigree is a listing of ancestors on both the sire's and dam's side, going back some number of generations. A five generation pediree is very common.
The function of a registry, such as that provided the AKC, is to keep these records, and certify to their accuracy. So if you have a puppy born to registered parents, when the puppy is registered, the registry will look in their records and provide a certified copy of its pedigree.
If all of those ancestors are of the same breed, you have a purebred dog. If they are of different breeds, then you have a mixed breed. AKC will not register mixed breed dogs, but an individual could keep a pedigree regardless of the different breeds that were involved. If a group is trying to establish a new breed, they would probably establish their own registry to keep track of pedigrees.
In summary, a pedigree is a listing of ancestors, a purebred is a pedigreed dog whose ancestors back some number of generations are all the same breed.

Well, you can't have a "purebred" without a proper "pedigree". A pedigree shows "x" amount of generations that were bred to eventually create your dog. It merely tracks the "family tree" of a dog, but does not mean a dog is breeding material. Assuming the breeder isn't shadey and falsifying documents, it proves that a dog is indeed a purebred.
Having a purebred dog with a proper pedigree and registration does NOT equate to breeding material. Reputable breeds do tons of pedigree research when planning for a breeding.

Good question because many people are always asking I want a pedigree dog on here or purebred dog on here.
A pedigree is a family tree. It has the listing of several of the anscestors on it. Such as the sire and dam and their parents..ect.
A purebred is a dog bred from two dogs of the same breed and all the dogs in their pedigree are the same breed.

A pedigree is a piece of paper, a document outlining the dog's "family tree."
A purebred is a dog that has a pedigree where all the dogs within the "family tree" are the same (purebred) breed.

a pedigree is the family tree...saying your dog is pedigreed doesn't mean they are superior to any other. Pure bred means they are...well...a pure bred. All dogs have a family tree...it's just that some mixed breeds pedigrees are unknown because no one has kept records on them and many times the parents are unknown.

"Pedigree" is a bad dog food, a piece of paper with your dog's ancestry on it, and what people call a purebred dog when they don't know what to call a purebred dog.
"Purebred" is a dog whose pedigree can be traced, and whose ancestors were all the same breed.
