That the universe always existed or that god created the universe, and why?

KayB: If everything has a beginning and end, where did god come from? Did he always exist? Then why is it not probable that the universe has always existed?

To other: Yes I know these are not the only options, and I'm not saying either are the correct one. Just didn't want the Q to be too complicated.

"The universe always existed" is by far more probable than creation.

Why..? Well, that would make a very long answer but I'll give a couple of undeniable highlights.

Probability and a little reasoning would suggest that a thing without the ability to reproduce itself is more likely to have been around for a long long time. Consider a rock as an example.

Additionally, and along the same line of thought, probability would suggest that since it already is and has shown no sign of ending soon the universe is a relatively stable system - that, too, is likely to mean that the universe is a very old system. Here you might want to consider the same rock but this time you'll want to seal it in a jar to keep it (the rock) even more stable than it already is and to hinder the likelihood that it will undergo change as the result of an external force.

Finally, (but "finally" only for the purpose of this answer) you'll want to consider how the parts of the universe behave. If probability says that by the laws of conservation we can expect that the energy vs matter vs antimatter ratios are likely to undergo change and yet remain in relative balance, (and that's precisely what that law provides,) then you can assume that the universe will probably remain in a similar balance straight on into infinity.

While none of the above is beyond sketchiness, it is all plausible and it is all very likely probable.

As for a Creator God.... Where in the heck did "he" come from and what quality of properties are applicable to "him" ?
I think it's only reasonable to resolve these questions before giving any degree of probability at all to the idea of a god-created universe. and since neither God nor any evidence of God has ever been found, I'd have to say that the chances of our universe taking rise by the method of creation stands currently and quite fairly at a very flat 0%.

Since time is part of the universe, there has never been a time when the universe did not exist. In that since, it has always existed, even if the past is finite.

Neither. It's quite probable that this is just one of many 4 dimensional, expanding spaces. Take a look into M-Theory and Super String Theory.

Edit:
From both the "probability" and "cosmology" aspects this is more of a science question, as the mathematics for probability should be precise and not just guesswork.

That God created the universe. Everything in our universe has a beginning and an end. Why shouldn't the universe function under the same laws it governs?

Ummm... the big bang was proven (thus the birth of the universe) and 4cm background radiation is the proof... what makes this proof even more convincing,4cm radiation as a remnant of the big bang was predicted before it was discovered, so the age of the universe is 18 billion years, now, what is your point ?

According to our current scientific beleives it was neither. Go doesn't exist and the universe came into being by a Big Bang (possibly preceeded by several other big bangs and big crunches)

Since there is no god, the universe was not created by this invented non-entity.

god was created when the universe was created.

god came into being when human consciousness and imagination evolved well enough for man to express his desire to rule over his fellow man.

I'm an atheist, but the Big Bang is something a God could have set in motion.
