i've seen the dewalt. it is built to take a beating - it's for construction sites isn't it? my advice is to go ahead and buy it - but make sure you have it engraved - to deter someone from walking off with it (keep the honest, honest). and keep the seriel number in a safe place. these radios are targets for thefts around construction sites due to their higher than regular value.

in terms of analog radio going bye-bye... other than Japan, other countries are not sure... the systems are not all the same... for the UK i post teh following from the DAB official site

"Q: Will analogue radio be switched off?
A: Eventually, analogue radio will be switched off and everybody will listen digitally, whether it’s through a DAB digital radio, or via a digital TV system.

But this is not likely to happen for many years. DAB and analogue radio will sit side by side until the government decides DAB coverage, products and programming has matured enough to be accessible to the vast majority of the population.

Based on Ofcom's current thinking to review AM switch off in 2009 and FM switch off in 2012 (or when DAB listening reaches 50%, whichever comes first) we estimate it will be 2015 at the earliest before analogue radio might be phased out."

If he wants a radio,,get him what he wants...Many things over a short span of time have to be updated..Just a sign of the times...He will be happy if that is what he wants ..GO FOR IT! Its the thought that counts..If he has to wait until ,IF IT GOES DIGITAL he won't have what he wants now...At least you know what he wants ..I have a hard time figuring my husband out for gifts I wish he would tell me what he wants. It would make things so much easier.

You should buy it if you don't want him to miss you while at work. While hearing a talk show, news or some chattering on it,he shall feel more at home.Don't worry about digital part.you can still use batteries else where.
