Crossword? Does christianas fit? Very old skool, and the full word for an ancient and forgotten technique called christies. Or snowploughs, with a British spelling.
There are some advantages to being an old fart (not many, but some)

You need to get lessons if you want to take up this sport and ENJOY it. The first and most basic is to sit down on your butt. That is not really accepted as an acceptable style of skiing.
The second and better way to control your speed is called a snowplow. You spread your legs apart just past shoulder length then point the tips inward and bringing only the tips to within about 4 inches of one another. Be careful not to cross the tips or down you go into a big tangled pile. The idea is to tip the skis so the inside edges are digging into the snow which will slow you down. The more you tip the skis and add leg pressure the better you will slow down.
The second is a side slip. You start practicing that by standing perpendicular to the downhill line (sideways) with your skis tilted sideways (you are bending your knees to the uphill side which puts the uphill edges into the snow) so you do not slip sideways down the hill. (this is why you need and instructor. It is easier to watch someone then to try and comprehend what I am saying) You then slowly start moving your knees back toward the skis so the skis start to lay flat on the snow. As you start this you should start to slip downhill. Try and keep the skis parallel and try to slide down the hill and not forward or backward. To control your speed just lean your knees back uphill digging the uphill edges back into the snow. This maneuver is not easy and need some practice. It is something you will need to know because you will be using this one maneuver all the time.
Have fun and be careful, wear a helmet, and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Sitting down is a bad idea, as is the "pizza" or "snow plow". The former leaves you utterly out of control, and the latter can completely destroy your knees (If you are going at any reasonable speed). Make a sharp turn, dont carve just slide your skis, and as you move down the mountain, dig your edges in. GET LESSONS!
