Si, por supuesto, pero no se lo pregunte a los yankis, que lo toman como un terrible insulto personal

well, I'm a "yanki", and I consider Spanish to be exremely important. Aside from the fact that we have many spanish speaking people living here in the US, Spanish is spoken throughout the western hemisphere. A great deal of important literature has been written by Spanish-speaking authors. In general, I believe it is important for people to study at least one language in addition to their native language, and for someone in the United States Spanish is a natural choice.

As I reread your question, I realize that you use the word "America". I tend to refer to my own country as the United States, since I am aware that in Spain, the word "America" can refer to all of north and south america. With that meaning of the word America, Spanish is the most spoken language here, so that makes it muy importante! :)

Los norteamericanos y los mexicanos ambos son americanos. (Y los chileanos, peruvianos, etc)

Yes, Spanish is extremely important in America . It is the second most spoken language in the USA. It is also the first language of several states in Southern America.
