I am wanting to get my parents internet service, and all thats available is dial-up service. I use cable high speed at work. IN comparision, using time as the factor, like seconds or minutes to load a page.

Sometimes I am forced to use dial-up internet service. It initially connects at 56kbps but drops to 28kbps and lower. I generally disconnect and reconnect if the speed is below 28kbps.

Dial-up is so slow that most new fangled websites that use tonnes of code just take too much time to load. I limit my dial-up use to Email and IM. No browsing while on dial-up.

In terms of time frame for loading webpages, it takes a couple of seconds with dial up. Also dial up is not good for if your family or parents rather want to view photos sent to them by family (my grandparents frequently send and get sent images of the family and relatives from out of state, and that requires more than dialup.

If they just want to browse the web, and send the occasional email, its fine. Yes it is a major step backwards and yes it is super slow compared to cable internet.

If they have phone service, you may want to see about dsl for their area, you should be able to get dsl in almost any area that has phone service.

Weigh the odds, what do your parents want to do with it? If they are like my grandparents which is probably right, you will need more than dialup.

Your connection time at work is probably 50-100 times faster than what your parents' dial-up connection would be.

The best that your parents could possibly get is 53kbps. Even that is unlikely, as it requires absolutely perfect lines and equipment.

Your cable connection at work is probably at least 2500kbps and possibly much, much faster.

Well, if you have cable, then dail-up going to be slow as Christmas getting here. For someone never had cable then dial-up may seem OK unless they download something. Messenger for example works as good on dial-up as it does cable once it going (Unless you try a file transfer, or webcam).

Are you sure that only dialup is available? The only way to tell for sure is if you update your question with their zip code so I or someone else can check with a locator service.
