Ask him, and watch his body language. If he looks down and to his right, he likes you, the answer is yes. If he looks up and to his left, he's looking for a creative way to tell you no. this happens because the right side of the brain is the logical, truth side, and the left is where creative lies come from. It works every timne in every situation. Lies=left.

If you are both shy, it will be hard to open up until you know each other better.
Here is my suggestion:
Spend time together in "non-threatening" situations so that you can get to know each other better. Many good relationships start off as "friends". Talk about stuff that matters to you. Books, movies, music, current events, etc. As you find common ground, it will be easier to talk about your relationship.
As the comfort level grows, find ways to spend time alone. Find things to do together along during the day, biking, hiking, shopping (easy on that one), going for coffee or lunch. Perhaps your both in to art or photography, go to museums, go out shooting photos. Do fun things that give you plenty of time to talk. Avoid awkward conversations, but don't necessarily avoid controversy. These days, the news and current events provide plenty of active talking points. Just don't attack his points of view directly. The idea is that if you guys can talk about important events in the world around you, it will be easier to talk about your budding relationship.
Eventually, the issue will need to be brought up, but it will be much easier if you have established trust already.
I guarantee you, as a former shy person, that if you just head right into saying something now, the answer you get won't make you happy, but it won't be the truth. The issue is that we are all afraid of rejection. He'll probably deny he likes you, even though you're all he can think about.
I am assuming that you both are somewhat inexperienced at relationships. Take it slow enough to build the comfort level.

if he's anything like my boyfriend he'll sit there for a while and be utterly speechless. And then he'll get really excited and tell you yes (or...not excited and tell you no).
is it a good idea for you to tell him? do you think he likes you? you don't wanna embarrass yourself if you're not sure. So if you don't know, just find out some more about him, watch the way he behaves around you carefully.
If all the signs point to yes go for it!
Good luck!

haha- i had he same thing happen to me (im shy and i liked a shy guy...) One of my friends (who can actually be quite annoying) bugged him until he told her that he liked me and then he actually brought it up with me- but it was in a note- so if you really want to know - however elementary school it may be- pass him a note...

You normally don't ask someone if they like you. If they do, they will let you know. Just talk to him, and be nice and have fun. He'll get the idea.

well, i'm not sure coz i'm a girl but i think..if he replies to you with a shy smile, then, he must like you too..but if he replies to you with the question "why?", then he must be too shy to be with you:(

This may make him very uncomfortable. Try telling him in other ways. He will pick up on it and if he feels the same way towards you, he will respond.
