It's a religion invented by a bad sci-fi writer, L.Ron Hubbard. It supposedly based on Buddhism, but it is so over the top in their beliefs and so controlling, it has become a joke even among the Christians.

Did you mean Scientology?
Or the Church of Scientology?
There is quite a difference between the two. Scientology is a bunch of self-help courses researched by a scifi author back in the 1950's. Great stuff. I took two of their courses (Better Communications, and Better Studying). But I stopped there. Didnt feel a need for the fighting peer pressure, or getting off drugs, or the higher counseling stuff.
Thats all that most people get from Scientology. Apparently the church stuff happens only at the toppest levels so its no big deal. ZC will be along shortly to give all that. ZC hasnt had contact with them but has researched tons of the stuff that is said about them so that might be the info you want.
Edit: Karin, you are supposed to touch your toe to the same object with slight pressure. Its valid. Your nerve endings are screaming and that changes the message.

Scientology is a an applied spiritual practice which is very effective at improving an individual's ability to resolve the confusions associated with life & spirituality.
The subject is adapted from the underlying philosophical, spiritual & psychological practices of a variety of much older religous traditions. Buddhist & the Vedic traditions practices are particularly prevalent as foundational principles in scientology although differing terminology is often used as being more "relevant" to contemporary speech. There are also many borrowings from traditional christian gnosticism.
The materials of scientology were principally written by L. Ron Hubbard with the assistance of many associates. They reflect specific techniques which he & his associates found to be most workable in helping others.
Many of the specific counselling techniques of scientology have been adapted by the modern field of mental health practitioners due to their efficacy at helping individuals resolve matters of personal stress.
As a freezone scientologist (independent of the Church of Scientology) and student & practitioner of the subject for over 25 years, I know this to be true from personal experience & study of the ACTUAL materials involved. :-)
In addition to the above, there also exists a Church of Scientology, which is a cultlike religious movement. It was originally founded by L.Ron Hubbard but has increasingly, over the 50 years since its foundation, focused its efforts on the financial growth of the organization rather than the actual practice of the tenets of the subject of scientology.
Many, if not most, people confuse the subject of scientology with the Church of Scientology. They are not the same.

Did you see the South Park episode about it? They nailed it head on. lol
Xenu (sometimes Xemu) is introduced as an alien ruler of the "Galactic Confederacy" who, 75 million years ago, brought billions of people to Earth in spacecraft resembling Douglas DC-8 airliners, stacked them around volcanoes and blew them up with hydrogen bombs. Their souls then clustered together and stuck to the bodies of the living. Scientologists believe the alien souls continue to do this today, causing a variety of physical ill-effects in modern-day humans. Hubbard called these clustered spirits "Body Thetans", and the advanced levels place considerable emphasis on isolating them and neutralizing their ill effects.

A very well-crafted prank. Try reading "The Bare-Faced Messiah" for more information on L. Ron; it's available online for free.

religion based off of dianetics by l.Ron Hubbard.
it borrows credibility from it's name "Scientology" obviously mimicking the word "science" it's just as bad as any other religion when concerning "reality", but it will dig deeper into your pockets...
