I have a story about my theory on this...it involves cavemen...
All the cavemen used to pray to "Bob" because Bob was the biggest caveman....
Bob would walk by, and if you didn't pray to him he would beat you down, so all the cavemen prayed to Bob..."Oh Bob, please don't hurt me, be merciful" or however you might say that in "caveman"
One day, Bob was running through the field towards the cave as the weather changed...
As he approached the cave, lightning struck Bob, and all the cavemen decided..."theres someone bigger than Bob"
as time went on the thoughts about the guy who is bigger than bob just got rediculous... and he got bigger and more powerful with every new story...
eventually "God" was born (all curent iterations)
*Bob's name may have also been "Gog"*

The worshiped animal spirits.
They also used a psychedelic stupor to enlighten themselves, using hallucinogenic plants, like the native America of today use peyote.

Who said they had one? If they had any, I'd imagine it would be a worship of the mother earth and the natural elements they found in their world. Some, I believe, revered animals. Bears, lions, wolves, etc. Depends I guess on the time frame and location.

the ones that left the cave paintings were probably animists, who believed everything had spirits. It's probable that the paintings were part of rituals to appease the spirits of the animals they were hunting.

They could have been pagans, nature-worshipers. Or, they could have been polytheists and assigned specific deities over certain aspects of their lives.
