Cat by far. Cats don't pee and poop on the carpet, you don't have to shovel their huge turds in the back yard, they don't get that wet dog smell, they don't get into your trash can and strew the contents all over your house, they don't track muddy paws in and then jump on your bed, and you don't have to give them baths. They also don't have dangling jowls that drip their drool everywhere.

Cats tend to leave less messes because they use a litterbox. They also tend to lick themselves clean and therefore are usually considered cleaner. Despite this, cats sometimes have troubles reaching certain areas if their anatomy to clean and you may find things hanging or matted there-especially if they're overweight or older.

Dogs need to be taken outside to use the bathroom and often will happily bound around the house full of mud without a care in the world.

However, it really does depend on the individul animal. Some cats/dogs may not 'follow the norm'. Furthermore, long haired breeds of either species are harder to keep clean because their fur may tangle or get muddy and they may have troubles cleaning it.

Generally how 'clean' an animal is, is often linked to how well cared for they are-much like a child.

I own both, 2 cats and a dog. The cats are definitely cleaner.

A cat is much cleaner by far. Not only do they keep themselves clean, but they rarely make messes. I got my kitten when she was a baby and once you show them where their litter box is, they use it (not your floor, like a dog would). With a dog or cat, you have to be careful of things they may get into though, for example, my cat likes to unravel the toilet paper, but other than that she never makes a mess.

a cat is way cleaner. You don't have to give them a bath, they do that by theirselves. They don't make a mess when you feed them and you don't have to pick up the mess they leave outside, but you do have to clean a litterbox. That is way better then having to worry about stepping in something when you go to get the mail in the morning. Plus, they don't get the nasty smell on them because they always smell good.

It's definately cats. It's a known fact. Cats are very clean animals and will even refuse to go to the toilet in the cat litter tray if it needs cleaning! Aaahhh!!
