Hi, I plan to go to New York City in a few weeks, and I have never been there before. Can anyone make suggestions for me to keep in mind in the Big Apple? What is your favorite attraction there? I only have a day, and I need to make the best of it!

You picked a great time to come. By the time you get here, the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center will be up, so you should definitely stop by to see that, and maybe do some ice skating while you're there. And from there, Times Square is only a short walk away. If you have time to take in a Broadway show, I recommend Avenue Q. It's hilarious. You can get discounted tickets for most shows at the TKTS stand, which is right in the middle of Times Square.) Then keep going to 34th street to check out the Macy's Christmas window displays. (People line up to see them--and it's free!) Also, the Union Square holiday market will be around then, so you should check that out. If you can, head to the village and maybe take in a comedy show at Comic Strip Life, or go to the Gotham Comedy Club in Chelsea. If you're looking for nightlife or great places to eat, go down to the meatpacking district over on the West Side downtown (below 16th street). And normally I wouldn't recommend extremely touristy things like those tour buses, but since you only have one day, it would actually be a great thing. They take you all around the city and you can get off wherever you want. I hear it's fairly cheap, too. The Circle Line was a good suggestion too, although if you do that in December, make sure you bundle up.

If you only have one day it is hard to see much in NYC. for a comprehensive overall view, I would suggest 2 things:
a Circle Line Cruise which takes you around the island and gives you a wonderful feeling of seeing the city, you'll see The Battery, Wall Street, Statue of Liberty, go through Hell's Gate, see the U.N. and the lighthouse under George Washington Bridge and many other highlights.

Next I would go to the top of the Empire State Building and be awed by the overall grandeur of New York.

Depending on your interests - there is so much to see. Would strongly suggest planning your day at nycvisit.com. This site has neighborhood information, maps, shopping tips, history, events calendar and more. Consider a morning bus tour for sightseeing - you'll see more than you would if you tried to do it all yourself in unfamiliar territory.
Would suggest visiting the Top of the Rock as opposed to Empire State Building as the lines are generally shorter and you get a great view of the Empire State Building, all of midtown Manhattan and Central Park too!
Enjoy!
