There is a difference between that which is secret and that which is sacred. It is really sad that the majority of people who ask this type of question do not recognize the difference.

Furthermore, if a Mormon does not wish to participate in the temple ceremony, it is not mandatory. That person is not required.

I am going to assume you are discussing the temple ceremony. And I'm sorry to disappoint you, but there is MUCH written about the temple ceremony which is easily accessible. I would suggest that you search LDS sources because they are written without an agenda and describe "why" we do what we do a bit better than the anti-Mormon sites.

In addition, the entire temple ceremony can be found in the Library of Congress.

Because certain ordinances are sacred. There is a difference between secret and sacred. Certain ordinances are done within the walls of holy temples, due to the sacred nature of them.
Other ordinances are performed for any and all to observe. Like baptism and confirmation and blessings.
To allow the whole world to know the truth, Mormon missionaries are sent throughout the world to preach Christ's Gospel, just as Christ himself instructed his disciples to do.

Additionally, if Mormons get a lot of ridicule from the uninformed for the most basic things, why would they want to get ridiculed for the most precious ones?

Actually we want everyone to come to the temple; what is sacred is for everyone who desires it - we just want them to take a bit of time for spiritual preparation first - in other words a year of living and practicing basic gospel principles.

It's like my calculus teacher wanted everyone to take his class, but he wanted them to understand the basics of algebra first so calculus would make sense.

By all means come to the temple, start learning the basics now by taking a tour of temple grounds and searching the scriptures for the many verses on the temple.

Best wishes

Because they are a cult. Secrecy is only one of the many earmarks of a cult.
