I recently had some religious doorknockers and tey opened their bible and quoted me some passages. The "god" in their bible has another name - which leads me to the question - who wrote the original bible? Why do different religions have different versions? How do we know that the bible is not just another fairytale - like Cinderella (only much longer)?

I wish I had more time to give your question the attention it deserves.

I would really be interested in the precise identity of the "doorknockers." Because you are not clear if they were a Christian group or non-Christian.

I suspect Christian: If so, they may have had a different translation or paraphrase of substantially the same Bible as every other Christian group, and the different name was maybe just a differing understanding of how that name should be pronounced.

The Bible is a composite object in that it is made up of several documents (how many and which documents is a matter of dispute). Each document has its own history of composition. There is no single "original" Christian Bible.

The Bible is not history, nor is it exactly a fairytale either. The relationship between its narratives/facts and what scholarly history/science would teach is complex. Do not buy into either the fundamentalist idea that it contains no error or into the extreme negative attitude that the Bible is worthless.

The remarkable structure of the Bible should also be stressed. Although it is a collection of 66 books, written by 40 or more different men over a period of 2,000 years, it is clearly one Book, with perfect unity and consistency throughout.

The individual writers, at the time of writing, had no idea that their message was eventually to be incorporated into such a Book, but each nevertheless fits perfectly into place and serves its own unique purpose as a component of the whole. Anyone who diligently studies the Bible will continually find remarkable structural and mathematical patterns woven throughout its fabric, with an intricacy and symmetry incapable of explanation by chance or collusion.

The one consistent theme of the Bible, developing in grandeur from Genesis to Revelation, is God's great work in the creation and redemption of all things, through His only Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

2 Peter 1:20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

The Bible is the word of God.It was written by men influenced by God. People change the Bible to suit their needs. The original Bible cannot be proven wrong by any man or sience. As for the fairytale part. Every day there are new discoveries and then they (sientists of the Christian kind) compair their discovery with the word of God and find it recorded.A classic example is the story of Sodom . It was beleived to be a story untill they dug up the remains and ruins in the, I beleive the 1990.The same thing happened with Noah's Ark. And the city of stone but I forgot the name.

Like almost everyone has said, the Bible is a God-inspired book. I guess the physical scientific and archiological evidence that people find all the time is proof that the Bible is real. In fact, people have been trying to dis-proof the Bible for hundreds of years, and so far they haven't succeeded! The best way to pretend the Bible is un-useful is to go into denial or blindly ignoring it.

Look most people fear death and are frightened of not existing “Blink” nothing aaarrrg help me. The Bible gives hopes to those with fears and helps those that wish not to face reality. All the bible asks is to have faith and be obedient to this God they mention and you will be rewarded with Immortality in far away land called heaven.
Escaping Death is a pretty strong determiner for some.

For others it’s the propaganda they have heard all their life and merely accept it as truth.

The bible was written over a 1500 year period, by 40 authors on three different continents in 3 different languages and yet it is in complete harmony with no contradictions because it was inspired by one mind.

People who were inspired by God. We can be sure that it is true because some of the things written long ago are happening just as the Bible said they would e.g. the Bible says that children will go against their parents and isn't that happening?

If you're refering to Catholic Bible:

the bible's author is not actually one. Bible is actually a compilation of books made by saints, apostles, prophets, etc.
these authors were actually guided by the hands of the holy spirit.

the compiler of books was i think is the former vatican council, likewise, the compiler is said to have been guided by the Holy Spirit. the holy spirit helped in arranging the books, and which books were not to be included.

another version is:

Bible(whichever religion) is just a great story created by a man who is very intelligent, witty, and had brainwashed the people for the past two milleniums.
