They do not sell anything. When they offer anything they only ask for a donation. This includes entire audio sets, bibles and any other publication they offer. You can give nothing if you choose. In addition they do not "pass the plate" they have a donation box set up in a remote corner so that you may give as much or as little as you choose without anyone judging you. I do not practice any religion but I am familiar with The Jehovah's Witnesses. They adhere to a strict following of their beliefs which is more than can be said for most religions which change policies at the drop of a hat.

JWs do not sell any publications. Back 40 years ago, there was a set contribution to ask for. Now days, there is not. A hard back book, nicely done, was for 50cents. Watchtower & Awake! magazines were a nickel. Big wow! What a profit! That isn't enough for the cost of paper.

Now look at some of the popular clergies books. $20.00 to $30.00 goes a little farther than the cost of paper. Charging for their preaching by passing the collection plate and again if it seems light to them is vastly different than "you received free, give free". (Matt. 10:8)

Does that mean that all of the publishing companies around the world that make and sell bibles are doing something wrong too? Does buying a bible make you an accomplice to the crime?

Also, maybe Christian versions of Proverbs 23:23 are different than ours, but our translations say nothing about selling religious texts.

Although it is true that the WTBS materials are "free" and they accept donations if the householder so chooses, it is taught in the Theocratic Ministry School that if you are calling on someone regularly and leaving materials and they never make a donation, to simply downgrade, as it were, to tracts. I remember on Thursday nights listening to the financial report for the congregation and them stating the publications cost them to print and cannot be continually left if they are not making donations. From a business, financial standpoint, I get what they are doing, yet shouldn't the word of God truly be free if the person is genuinely interested? While I'll admit exceptions are made for those that simply cannot afford to donate, it seems to always come to the "bottom-line".

The Watchtower is NOT for sale, neither are any of the publications of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Our preaching work is run on voluntary donations, if someone wants to donate in appreciation for the good reading material, we accept those. No one is forced to donate anything. The money people donate is not for the particular magazine they are receiving, but it goes towards the making of magazines in the future.

I'll put it this way- if I give out magazines to three people, one donates $50, another $10, the third gives nothing- was the Watchtower really for sale?

We all received free, we give free. We are not even paid for our preaching.

I am not JW currently (the common USA usage); but 'sell' the word is talking about (getting rid' of God's word as I presentlytake it. (I looked up the text before responding here for now.
