How would you prefer that God tell the cardinals? You think the Holy Spirit can't work through the process they use?

In politics, most Christians believe that even though an election process takes place, leaders are in their positions because that's where God wants them to be.

There was one pope, though -- St. Fabian -- who was chosen after what those assembled considered an unmistakable sign of God's desire in the matter. So it's never assumed that the same won't happen again.

"Pope St. Fabian (236-250), the extraordinary circumstances of whose election is related by Eusebius (Hist. Eccl., VI, 29). After the death of Anterus he had come to Rome, with some others, from his farm and was in the city when the new election began. While the names of several illustrious and noble persons were being considered, a dove suddenly descended upon the head of Fabian, of whom no one had even thought. To the assembled brethren the sight recalled the Gospel scene of the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Saviour of mankind, and so, divinely inspired, as it were, they chose Fabian with joyous unanimity and placed him in the Chair of Peter."

Well, there is scriptural precedence for voting - in the Acts of the Apostles, they voted for which man was going to replace Judas as an apostle. Now days they say the Holy Spirit will guide the college of cardinals, and I suppose they figure some of them will hear the Spirit better than others.

Popes used to be appointed, however, there were some issues with the popes appointed at one point. At a time, there were 3 popes in effect, they needed a new system.

Jesus told his apostles he was giving them the authority to bind and loosen things on Earth. That includes who they believe would be the best choice as their own chief Bishop.

That's how apostolic succession works. They keep a council on who replaces who. Don't like it? Sorry =(
