First of all, more information is needed. However, i can hear something in what you're saying.
1) I'm guessing you've been hurt before, and I'm guessing it was either often, or deep, or both.
2) you are looking for reassurance anywhere you can find it, which seems a bit desperate and mistrusting.
If you love him, then love him. Don't let your doubts get in the way of you loving him. If there is a mistake to be made, let him make it and act on that, don't let your doubts ruin what could be a good relationship. That being said, gaurd your heart well and only let him closer to it if he earns that, and make him earn it well.

It depends on how you believe him or not. It is about the relationship which you have with him from the past how many years you know him and also the way you treat him. Then you will come on a decision on trusting him or not. It takes years of knowing one and another to trust someone but it just takes a few seconds to break that trust. Think wisely and then go ahead with your suggestion.

Depends what he's done to hurt you.
I lost my trust in my boyfriend last year when he left me but gradually I he regarined my trust and now a year later we're the happiest we've ever been.
It's whether you're both willing to change to eachothers needs.

basically trust is earned.. if you think he earns it.. then do so..
afraid of being hurt is a normal emotion and usually due to uncertain existing circumstances... check those issues out and if possible to solve them, do so... if not, i will leave you with one last question which you can only answer...
is he worth the risk?? if your answer is yes, then love (verb)him. at least, know your limitations.
