Do you get a TV internet access or any other thing the guest may get. Or is it a small dirty room right next to the ships engines.

On any given cruise ship there are a big variety of positions and also there is a wide range of salaries. About half of the staff is paid by salary, from the ship's captain and his immediate assistants who may be paid near $100K per year to the heads of the ship's departments like hotel, the kitchen, the security, the medical, and entertainment. Check out this web page for info on their pay.

Then there are the service positions on ship where total income per person is based on a wage and tips. People like waiters, cabin stewards, and assistant waiters and bar tenders may make $30K a year or less.

There was a travel channel show a while ago where they showed what the crew quarters are like. They typically share a cabin with 3 other people but not as nice as passenger cabins. They have their own recreation and eating areas. On our last cruise I had a conversation with a member of the cruise director's staff who said they can use the internet but it is not free. They get a discounted rate that is better than the rate for passengers.

I actually asked waitstaff this weekend on my Royal Caribbean cruise. They receive wifi in their cabins, and yes, they sleep further below than guests. They work 12 hour days or so, and are paid soley by tip. I'm sure this doesn't apply to every employee. I was told this is why most employees are not from the States, being that the States would require them to be paid an hourly wage. They take two months off a year, and depending how long they've been with the line, they can opt for a longer vacation.

I was very fascinated with life on a boat, ha.

depends a LOT on the line and the ship.
Ive had wireless and Ive had over 60 days with no internet at all due to malfunction and nobody bothered to fix.
Ive been well treated and had good cabins and also was in a ship (Carnival actually) which was so screwed up there were tons of flies on the cabins and the rest roons didnt work, so it was filled with ****. Ive had air condiotioners broken in the tropics and we still had to wear suit and tie...
Really depends.
