I think an easy way to explain that is if you're "in love" you actively feel the emotion itself. You are smitten, can't get enough of them, it's an obvious manifestation of affection.

If you love someone you have the same deep rooted emotion, but it's more comfortable. More relaxed and evolved.

When you're in love, you'll get those butterflies when they wink at you. But when you love someone it's a very strong bond that goes beyond the stage of excitement.

Love isn't always exciting, being in love is.

You love your friends, your dog, your car, a deep feeling that grows on you and would cause you distress to lose the relationship.
Being IN love you are in an altered state of bliss and insanity and it consumes your whole being before it simmers down to a steady feeling of like and Hormones that can last a lifetime.

Loving someone - your family, your friends. a bond, a thread between you. A warm, comforting feeling. Secure and strong.
Being in love? Heart pounding, excitement, riding in a rollercoaster taking your breath away smiling all the time.

well i just broke up with my ex of 4 years i love him loke crazy but i fell out of love with him u could always have feelings and care for some one when they become a big part of ur life but sometimes love is just not enough to keep u happy and u still have the love for them but u just dont feel the happiness and the joy of it any more
