tele means distant or distance, tele is used to describe a "longer" view - a tele lens will make things appear closer
a tele lens is the oppisite of a wide lens, a wide lens gives a wide view,
so telephoto lens see a longer distance, a zoom lens is a lens that goes from a wide setting to a tele setting
eg's
wide lenses have numbers like: 12mm 14mm up to 35mm,
tele lens are numbers like 70mm - 800mm or so
standard is from around 45 - 55mm ish
zoom lenses have numbers like 12-24mm - wide zoom lens
18-55 wide - standard zoom lens
55-200 standard to tele
et cetera

A telephoto lens is defined as any lens which incorporates a telephoto group into its design.
A telephoto group is a specific combination of lens elements which serve to move the nodal point of the optics past the front element of the lens.
Since the nodal point, or optical center, of the lens is the point from which focal length(when focused at infinity) is measured, moving the nodal point past the front element of the lens means that the lens has a focal length longer than the physical length of the lens.
This is significant since a conventional design would require a lens with a focal length of, say, 800mm, to in actuality be about a meter and a half in length. Most people wouldn't want to carry around a lens this big.
Today, most all lenses for 35mm cameras which are longer than 100mm or so use a telephoto design.
A zoom lens is a lens which has the ability to change its focal length without changing the point of focus in doing so. This definition is usually fudged slightly, as many "zoom" lenses out there do in fact change their focus somewhat in the course of changing their focal length. A lens which can change its focal length and changes its point of focus in doing so is properly called a "varifocal" lens, however this is a term which you never see used anymore.
A zoom lens can cover any focal length range and still be considered a zoom lens.
A zoom lens can also incorporate a telephoto group, in which case it would be called a telephoto zoom lens.

Strictly, I would apply the term 'telephoto' to a 'long focus', fixed focal length lens from about 100mm focal length upwards. A zoom lens has a variable focal length and come in numerous configurations - 18-28, 28-75, 75-300, or even 28-300 of some of the latest 'super zooms. A zoom lens can have telephoto capabilities, but doesn't always.

depends whay you mean by difference? a telephoto lens in one which is fixed at a given size, ie 135mm ... (these are prime lenses) they have greater apertures than zooms, i have a F2.8 135mm lens, whereas a 28--135 is f4.5/ f5.6...
zooms are slower, (unless you pay thousands of pounds for them) but, they are convenient. changing a prime lens in a studio is dead easy, dragging 100lb of kit out into the field is a logistical nightmare.
