A lot of people drive cars that probably shouldn't as they don't do it well, it's the same with cameras, some people know how best to use them some don't. Natural ability, learning/school and experience all play a role.
There will always be a need for photographers that can make the equipment dance.
When cameras were invented there were those that probably asked if there would be a need for painters (artists) and I'm sure there are more artists today than ever.

That is a GREAT question to ask photographers. My contribution is this: Photos are good for preserving memories, as many people have said. However, for me that is not the main reason - sometimes, I like to use my 'minds 'eye' for that purpose - like when I went to Auschwitz intending to take lots of photos - and didn't take a single one. Why - because you can get stock photos of Auschwitz anywhere. What that place left in my mind couldn't be reproduced on film.
For me then - I use it to SEE. ??? What!
Yes because in our busy everyday lives, we do lots of looking and very little seeing. Sometimes - just having the camera in your hands makes you see more in every eyeballfull (?). Sometimes I get back to the postprocessing and find things I didn't even notice when I took the shot. Its all about developing 'The Eye' for photography. I haven't got there yet - but I'm getting there.
If you're not into it - get a camera and get out there. You'll begin to see instead of just watching the world flash by at 300 frames per second.

I agree with other answers in that the art of photography has become much more accessible to everyone since the advent of camera phones and digital easy-to-use camers. Some people are really good at taking pics for themselves, however, there are many more that aren't so for special occasions I reckon a good photographer is the obvious and welcome option. I'm recently married, and although I've been shown pics from guests which look really nice, when you see the actual professional ones the difference is immediately apparent.

Why is there a need for chefs?
A professional knows his or her job. They have done it for years and know how to get the best out of a project. Photographers don't just bring lots of expensive equipment to the table, they come with years of experience and knowledge only someone dedicated to their profession could accumulate.
Just because they make is look easy does not mean it is easy.

If there weren't photographers, who would take the BEST shot of our BEST memories in life?
NOBODY can match the skill of a photographer who can catch the BEST glimpse of you in the BEST moments of your life...
yes, anybody can take the place of a photographer today with the advent of digital cameras with instant printers at a very low price...
BUT it is still different when you hire someone who has studied so much regarding photography... you are assured to get the BEST shot of the BEST time of your life...
photographers will continue to be in need in the future... especially for special occasions such as weddings, baptismal, grand birthday celebrations, etcetera...

Yes. While digital cameras will soon be so cheap that everyone will own really good quaity ones, to take a photo and make it look professional is an art that professional photographers have. And sometimes, you want that professional looking edge for special occasions where a digital capture can't quite do it justice.

Every billboard, every advertisement, every magazine cover you see has a photographer behind it. If you think that simply having an expensive high tech camera is enough to take a great photo it is a great misunderstanding.

Because photography for some is ART. And it IS art. It's more than just clicking, editing and printing to treasure a memory of some sort. It should capture the soul, the character, and the truthfulness of the whole thing.
