The 3 main types of warrants are a search warrant, an arrest warrant and a warrant to wiretap your phone (electronic surveillance). Probable cause is needed and must be presented to a judge though not in court. An officer can go to a judge's home in the middle of the night if necessary, tell the judge why they believe they have probable cause and a judge can issue a warrant. Search warrants have to be specific in that you must specify exactly what you're looking for...you can't just say I want to enter John Doe's house and search it. You have to say, and this is a for instance only, we have reason to believe (and those reasons are...) John Doe committed murder, and we're searching for a gun which may have been used to commit the murder, blood, evidence of the victim having been in the home (a wine glass with her lipstick on it) , or if the murder was committed elsewhere, evidence John Doe was at that scene (ie: a matchbook from a specific bar). They can seize unrelated evidence of a crime ONLY if it is in plain view (ie: a bag of pot was sitting on the kitchen table). If the police go in without a valid warrant (or a warrant that is too restrictive) and evidence is seized and your lawyer is successful in challenging the evidence in court, all evidence that directly relates to the seized evidence can also be excluded as the "fruit from the poisonous tree." That's just a very brief explanation, obviously thousands of legal cases are out there on this subject.

A search warrant is issued by a judge, and the officers need to be specific as to what they are looking for, and where they want to search. An arrest warrant is signed by a judge based on the probable cause that that person committed the offense. Courts will issue their own arrest warrants for things like not showing up for tickets, or not paying tickets. But most states have certain listed crimes that if committed a warrant is not necessary for an arrest to be made. In Ohio for example, crimes of violence, menacing, child enticement, indecent exposure are a few. Most arrests police make are warrantless arrests, meaning they go to a call, determine if a crime has been committed, and if the offender is on scene they will arrest wiothout warrant ie: domestic violence.

Usually probable cause.

Police do not issue warrants it is the magistrate (judge) in the courthouse that issues warrants. Most common are Fail to Appear and Fail to Pay Fines.
Police enforce the orders of the court and actually state and local law.
Warrants for arrest are usually request in emergency cases by contacting a judge and the judge signs the forms for a warrant. so same stuff.

A warrant is just a court writ allowing the officer to do something specific like arrest or search. It is shown to you and you get acopy so you know what he can and can't do.

Let's say he has a warrant to search you home for a stolen piano. So you read your copy and you know he is looking for a piano. This means he can't look in the medicine cabinet or in your jewelry case for the piano.

But if he gets a call that someone who looks like you just stole a piano and he drives by your house and sees you pushing a piano in you garage he can search and arrest without a warrant.

Evidence must be presented in court if there is probable cause in the commission of a crime in order that a warrant of arrest can be issued against a suspect.

I have no experience on this field, but I can tell you, cops are crooks too. So, if you're being harassed by a cop, get a lawyer.bCops are known to abuse their power of authority on a daily basis.

Cops use a warrant so they can search your possession and property, for anything illegal such as drugs and contrabands. Just don't run if they issue a warrant, because you could face further repercussions with the law.

Check with your local college law library. They should have books that would answer your questions.
