No it is not true. Where did you hear that? In BC anyone that is 19 and over can buy alcohol, no discrimination by nationality.

What you can't do is bring it home with you. Or drink it and drive home. Once you enter the US you are an intoxicated minor.

The age rules are different province to province. Only Quebec, Alberta and Manitoba are 18. The rest, including BC, are 19.

it always has been that way if you have been buying booze in Canada you were buying it under age the crack down is now on we got a bulletin about the very thing the other day. it basically said any and all us citizens drinking in you place of business must be 21 or older. if they are found drinking under age the owner will receive a fine of up to $5000. the us patron will receive a fine up to $2500. and returned to the united states. the patron there for will not be allowed to enter Canada until they have reached age 21. in past months our business has received multiple warnings no fine but the folks were returned to the USA

I thought you could buy alcohol in Canada if you were over 18. I have some friends at the University of Washington, and they go up to Canada every couple of months and go to the bars up there since it's 18 and over.

Well in Alberta, you can drink if you are over the age of 18. You are in a different country so the Canadian laws apply not american ones, if you over the age of 18 you can drink just as if you were going to another country over seas where the drinkign age was lower...as for taking it back...probably not.
