And why do people who don't believe in Christ use His name when they stub their toe?

The world may never know the answers to these deep questions.
But to you give an entirely non-religious answer, it has to do with the traditional use of vernacular language versus formal speech.

Your hypothesis is incorrect.. I do not believe hell exists at the same time I do not consider the word hell a cuss word... Hell is simply a word... To use the word hell in a common sentence would equate to using the term Never Never Land.. Yet another fictional place...

In everyday conversation I do not use the word hell often as any of the common phrases people use would equate to "Go to Never Never Land." which really doesn't have much of a punch to it... It's difficult to tell someone "You are a piss slurping wanker, go to Never Never Land." with a straight face now isn't it... :)

Why do people who don't even believe in Hel, still consider it a cuss word?

Hel is the Norse goddess of the underworld. The English word "hell" derives from her name, not the Christian realm of Satan.

1. Because it is still a place of damnation even if they don't believe in it.
2. They just go by what the world has to say about the world hell and to them if it is said to be a bad word than it is.

words are funny.

tell me which is worse:

that's a shitload of paperwork

or

i just took a crap on your car.

if you said "shitload of paperwork" you would be wrong. it's all in the idea being expressed not the sh sound being followed by some other noises.

it's ridiculous that we consider any words to be curse words.

you can be downright malicious without so much as a "damn"

or you can be agreeable with a "hell yes"

people who get upset about one letter following another to make a certain sound have their priorities all wrong.
