I bought a WWI doughboy helmet and it appears to be painted very dark blue almost black. What type of helmet is this? I have never seen one this color.

Depending on its origin it could have been used by the Navy, post WW1 during WW2 or even by the Civil Defence, for more info take a look through some of the websites on line using military helmets in a search engine, some are cataloged by country.

Picture link would help a lot to id your helmet!

The so called Dough-boy helmets might even have British or European connections as this type was used by Belgium and Holland post WW2.

If it shaped like a doughboy helmet, it definitely is one, but I've never seen or heard of a black or dark blue painted version. Check out the paint...

I believe it could be a U.S. Civil Defense Corps or Civil Air Patrol helmet. The Civil Defense corps used the WWI Helmet during WWII for duty here in the U.S you can still buy them on E-Bay: http://cgi.ebay.com/World-War-1-or-WW2-Army-Helmet-Old-Civil-Defence-Helmet_W0QQitemZ220172038373QQihZ012QQcategoryZ156395QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
