Well, Christ Himself told some of the Jews that their father was Satan, so my guess would be the latter not the former.
We are all made in God's image, it's our hearts that make idols for themselves. We all have the potential to be a child of God though, just read Romans chapter 11 and 12.

Tech. all humans are God's Children like to that of an Inventor's Robots and their creations being that Inventor's Children.
Looking back further in Religion to things fiddled with, taken out, and not important to the Layman... with the Exception of God's Powers / Djinni and Angels [and custom Humans, of course], everything else is not God's Children. Kinda hard to follow,.. eh. Some Angels and the details to everything else were created by Djinni who were working to the Will of God but the intelligent [non-human] races are supposed to recognize as their Parents (though they may still see God as their father).
I did way too much research as usual because this intrigued me. Unfortunately, I cannot give you sources with great details online as this creates much fighting,.. especially religious faiths clashing. As a result places like Wiki are now kinda like " Umm,.. they are Video game monsters" when you try to reserach Djinni and "Genie".
As far as Faiths go. The most powerful Faiths in English speaking (origin or domenately and as their accepted language verse a secondary or just common one) rush to this point where if you are not specificly their faith and their version of that faith then you might as well not exsist and you have no afterlife... likely. These are very selfish people and the people in the most control of the followers are hungry for power and material possesions. To them you must pay them to help endorse "their God" and his houses and after life Kingdom or the bandwagon cult-like followers should turn their nose up at you and be abuseive,.. unless you are out of the group then you do not count.
One thing that some of these versions of faiths thing they have found so they can assert control is that if you are introduced to God (really their faith), then you must follow and pay your way into getting accepted into the afterlife,.. but this loophole says that if you are not introduced you are ignorant and therefore can enter Heaven without a monetary or recruitment point system. So they goal becomes to introduce God (really their faith) to the poorest, sickest, weakest people they can find who then will not enter Heaven for all their suffering because their leaders claim they need to pay in and get brownie points.
This is sad and annoying. I keep seeing more and more self centered Humans without Empathy or Sympathy. I had no clue normal people were so different from me, but it appears they have to learn to fake/act like they have Empathy and Sympathy.
But anyways,.. it's just a matter of whom you ask and what their agenda is. I think it would be better to help others then waste your time with these competitions of faith. (The sum of which is Assimulate or cease to even have a Soul).

The answer varies depending on the sect you ask.
The more conservative branches will insist that only "True Christians" (ie: them) are "children of God".
I guess everyone else in the word are adopted or something?

we are all God's children whether we are good or bad, believers or non- believers. After all, if no one has spread the word to the non-believers they can't be denied. He is Our Father and He will always love us like our earthly fathers but more so. He tries to help us be good but has given us free will to make our own path through life. I expect He will judge us when we die.

He is the Father. All of us are His children. We just need to realise this and then miracles will happen. God is neither Christian nor Hindu or Muslim, but nevertheless He is God. He is the creator of this universe and of us.
Rather meet God personally(!), instead of looking at him from different religious point of views.

Thanks for posing your question! Just want to share a portion of Scripture to answer your questions, if you don't mind!
"He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God." John 1:10-13
Just to elaborate: This portion of Scripture speaks about Jesus Christ. We are ALL God's creation but we only receive the right to be called the Children of God when we receive and believe in JESUS CHRIST. God Bless you!!!

In two senses;
1. All of us get our life from God, in that sense we are his children.
2. People who DECIDE to serve God and do his will have a special relationship with God, also referred to as being his children.

No matter what you believe you are God's child. He loves everyone even the atheists. He loves you so much he lets you choose what you believe in he doesn't force you

Believers are God's children. Scripture calls unbelievers children of the kingdom, children of the world and children of the flesh among other things.

I will make this easy. Read the first 2 chapters of Ephesians.
Paul explains that when we exercise our faith in Jesus, we are adopted (the Greek word is a legal term that denotes full rights of inherence) into the family.
Check it out with an open mind you will understand that it is open to anyone. Not all desire it.
