Next year when i go to do my tax returns, will my return be affected by unpaid property taxes. Earlier last year a buddy of mine and I bought a house together in Sacramento, Ca and my buddy ended up stealing the money we had and moved out of state leaving the house to go to default. I've received many notices in the mail about unpaid property taxes- and I am worried because I cannot pay them- if when I go to do my income taxes to get a return if the unpaid taxes on my property will affect my income tax returns? Will I have to owe?? Please give me a good answer!! Thanks!!
Also can the people who control unpaid property taxes put a lien on your checking account and take money out?

California real property taxes are a lien on the property not the owner. The county tax collector has first call on any proceeds when the house is sold or, if the taxes are not paid for five years, he can sell it. Unless you have made the place into a toxic waste dump, the taxes will be paid.

Your income tax refund CAN be captured for unpaid taxes and certain other government debts and back child support. For property taxes it would be more likely to see a state refund captured but anything is possible.

Most jurisdictions don't attach bank accounts for unpaid property taxes. The lien against the property is sufficient to cover the tax liability.

when you dont pay taxes, they can do most things incl garnish wages I believe. If you know your buddies new address, Id make sure the IRS and the city of sacramento know. Now maybe you should refi and get that money for the taxes and at the same time take his name off the title somehow. realestate is still an investment in the long run and he doesnt deserve any part of it. Hope it works out.

They are not related. Unpaid property taxes will incur a lien on your house not your checking account.
