Actually if you only have carry-on luggage you can do it for $2.00
Get a single trip{ one ride +one transfer ] MetroCard at LGA
Take the M-60 bus to the last stop -116th ST -Columbia
Take the #1 downtown train to 96th St and walk one block west
The problem with cabs is that NYC cabs charge you for time stuck in traffic and distance driven .
The 22 minutes cited above may very well work at 4:00 AM but at the wrong time of day you could easily double or possibly triple that

I believe it shouldn't cost anymore than $40.00 usd. it's not like u went across country. it's a 22 mins ride, and it's only 8.96 of total est distance - if u paid more than that report it to better business bureau, small claims court ect, ect...
point is get ur $$$$ back or make an example out of this situation

Actually, I believe these days it's a flat rate of $45 to come from the airport to Manhattan.
