It's a very good question, and yes, it does seem illogical. But of course it depends on what kind of logic you use.
Actually God did say something along the lines of what you propose ('Behave or else'). That's exactly what the 10 commandments and the rest of the Law are all about. Trouble is, it didn't work, so there had to be another way, often described as 'having the law within you' rather than as an external book to follow.
A full explanation would take pages and pages, and many books. Is it enough to say that many very clever people over many centuries have explored just the sort of questions you raise, but seen the answer not as illogical and irrational, but deeply profound? The key, as you suggest, lies in the death of Jesus, which was certainly bloody and tragic, but very much more as well.
The Cross is what separates Christianity from all other religions, and the one event on which it stands or falls.

It goes back to the sin that Adam and Eve did. You see the blood of animals only push sin a year forward but never washed away the sin and so God decided that the only way would be to offer a sacrifice that was Holy and with out sin. The beauty of it all is just like the beginning when God created man, he gave him a the ability to choose what he wanted to do. If God wanted people not to have a choice and just serve him he would have created more Angels because that's exactly what they do and they don't have a choice but we do. I respect peoples opinion I sure don't feel like I'm better because the bible reminds us that such were some of us before we came to Christ. This is how I feel, I believe with all my heart but I will not try to shove it down your mouth but as for me I will reason with you but you reason with me also. Lets just say there is no God, the day I die at least I was a better citizen because I believed and changes my ways for the better. Do you agree? But now lets just say I don't believe and find out there was a God and be lost for eternity, What then? I say I rather be safe than sorry.

It seems that you really are looking for an answer to this, so I'll do the best I can to articulate everything that's in my mind regarding this question. I hope it helps.
In Judaism, the penalty for sin has always been death. Before Jesus, Jews sacrificed animals as penance. Basically, what they sacrificed bore the penalty for their transgressions.
But God knew that a greater sacrifice would be needed, to bear the penalty for ALL sin of ALL people. So God placed part of His essence into what probably would have been an ordinary man, if Mary had not been a virgin at the time of the conception.
If Jesus was just a prophet, and not the Son of God nor God Himself, we are still dead in our sins. Period. Without fulfilling the prophecies, Jesus would have been just another man who was executed for political reasons. But He DID fulfill the prophecies, and He DID suffer the penalty for our sins, and then, just to prove who and what He was, even the grave couldn't hold Him.
This isn't everything that was on my mind, because in all truth, the whole concept is really hard to grasp, and even harder to put into words. But that's the gist of it.
If you're really searching for answers, I seriously suggest you read the Bible and ask God for guidance. Then LISTEN. Ask God for the Holy Spirit. Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would be here to guide us if we asked. Hold Him to that promise.
I did. That's why I'm now a Christian.

People fail to look at the entire picture. They start at the crucifixion and go forward. The question begins at where did we come from and why are we here? I believe in God; I have personal experiences that tell me God is real. The plan of sacrifice was one set in motion to save all people. God’s wrath is strong; we see it in the flood …where only one family survived. The book of Enoch has an insight on this subject…although it isn’t considered God inspired…it’s an interesting read.
Why didn’t God just announce himself…he traveled many years with the Israelites and they couldn’t keep the law? No one has the capacity to understand the mind of the Godhead (Father Son Holy Spirit), but what we do know is that he has mercy or Jesus wouldn’t have come. The Bible itself is amazing because it states more than 2800 times thus saith the Lord, a word from the Lord…the NT and OT. Authors lived hundreds of years apart and yet they all work together…it’s hard to deny that God had a hand in writing the Bible. The Dead Sea Scrolls are proof that God’s word was the original word of God…not one word had changed. There is no corruption in his word.
The history and time periods line up. The book of Daniel is very interesting in that it’s prophecy have been fulfilled with only one week (7 years) left .
People question the existence of God, but never truly look outside of their own thought or idea of what or who he is…today we have so many resource to search the Bible to find inaccuracies….but it still stand true.
Jesus fulfilled the prophecies of the Messiah…there is no way he could have nudged Mary from the womb and tell her he wanted to be born in Bethlehem.
The sacrifice of Jesus was an ultimate blood sacrifice to save all people; few will choose to find out why.

In the Old Testament, God told us that He would come to Earth. I will show you a few of the many places where He says that.
Zechariah 14
3 Then the LORD will go out and fight against those nations, as he fights in the day of battle. 4 On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will be split in two from east to west, forming a great valley, with half of the mountain moving north and half moving south.
Psalm 24
7 Lift up your heads, O you gates;
be lifted up, you ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
8 Who is this King of glory?
The LORD strong and mighty,
the LORD mighty in battle.
9 Lift up your heads, O you gates;
lift them up, you ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
Isaiah 9
6 For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Daniel 9
25 "Know and understand this: From the issuing of the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the ruler, comes, there will be seven 'sevens,' and sixty-two 'sevens.'
Daniel 7
( Note: The Ancient of Days and the Most High are God )
21 As I watched, this horn was waging war against the saints and defeating them, 22 until the Ancient of Days came and pronounced judgment in favor of the saints of the Most High, and the time came when they possessed the kingdom.
Proverbs 30
4 Who has gone up to heaven and come down?
Who has gathered up the wind in the hollow of his hands?
Who has wrapped up the waters in his cloak?
Who has established all the ends of the earth?
What is his name, and the name of his son?
Tell me if you know!
Jesus didn't just happen on the scene, He is God. God IS One, but He is more complex than just saying, "He is One". That's what many people miss.
I would have to take you through much of the Old Testament to tell you about the reason why the sacrifice had to be done the way it was done. I suppose you have no Jewish background in all of this, so I would have to start from scratch.
Yet! I can tell you, that the Book of Hebrews goes into much of this. At least there you can hear it from an expert, not like now which is from me- not an expert.

It is the logic of love. Love is absurd. Not simple and plausible.
More than a metaphor--Jesus is alive!
Through Jesus Christ you can connect with God in a way that is just so amazing that you wouldn't believe. Which I suppose is the problem, isn't it.

For starters, we believe what we will so no some will not subscribe to your point of view. Remember the jews had been foretold for thousands of years of the son of god coming to save them, hundreds of prophets had been telling the same story. Not all the jew believed but the story has some eerie historical points and can be proved that it happed. I dont think you have to believe who he is , just his message, the true message of love and peace to all mankind not just jews or future christians.
If more followed Jesus and ignored who he is and followed the teachings and message the world would surely be a better place

God can not die so He made Himself a body that would die. The law says the body that sins must die, Jesus died not for Himself but for us. God cannot break the law & He knew that no man was worthy to die for the sins of man, because it required a perfect & just man, a man without sin. So Jesus said here I am send Me & God did. Have you ever heard, if you love something let it go, if it comes back it is your's to keep if it doesn't it was never meant to be. That is why God has given us a will to chose Peace!!!

"The foolishness of God is wiser than men and the weakness of God is stronger than men."
If he was an ordinary man, why would countless people who knew him be willing to die horrible deaths? People were martyred for their belief in Christ's divinity. It is completely implausible that they would all be mistaken. About as likely as my family and friends declaring ME a God after my funeral!
