NO this isn't something perverted. I teach history at a high school and this is only my 2nd year teaching. I teach it for grades 11 and 12, in Missouri (I wont say school or town for privacy reasons) . I also have had a recording studio in my basement that I have been using for about 6 years. I use it with my band, and also use it with other local bands who want to make an EP for some extra money. ( I master all the work and it's very professional) . Anyways, 4 of my students who have their own band asked me if they could pay to use my studio and if I'd master and mix their songs. Only 1 of those for students is not a minor. If I was to let them come to my house and charge them to use my studio (the same as I charge all other bands) and help them with their EP, could I get in trouble in anyway legally since they are my students? Would my job or reputataion be at stake in any way? Please let me know what you know. Thank you.

Definitely ask the principal and if he or she says yes, make sure one of your students parents is there at ALL TIMES. People make up lies, I would hate for you to get involved in a sex scandal and you've done nothing wrong.

I don't see how this could be illegal in itself, but it's very likely a violation of school policy and certainly a violation of common sense. It's critical that you keep clear boundaries with all students, especially the ones in your class. That means more than just avoiding romantic entanglements. It's a bad idea to enter into business relationships with your students as well. Aside from the general principle, you're opening yourself up to conflict of interest issues. What if the band doesn't like your production work, they gripe about it to everybody, and then one of them fails the class? The story among the students would be that you retaliated because they were saying unflattering things about you. That's not the kind of reputation you want.

And why are you asking this in the singles & dating section if you're not looking to date any of the students?

Fraternization is usually defined as an undue familiarization with someone you are responsible for like a supervisor or teacher. By having only a portion of your students there could be seen as fraternizing and lead to more serious trouble. Once they are no longer your students they become clients like anyone else. In today's society appearances receive just as much consideration as actual events. Wait until after the school year is over.

I would have the students' parents come along to the studio with their kids. It's not wrong, it's just something that people would look down upon. Believe me, you're doing a completely honest thing it's just that people have wild imaginations...three minors in a teacher's house in the basement...it's just not a good set up. Like I said, have the parents come as well...just to be safe.

It opens you up for a crazy amount of liabilities...although, you mean well by it, it is almost guaranteed that it will turn ugly and take you down with it. Keep the relationship with your students purely academic and purely school related.

You sound like a cool teacher, well-liked, and able to influence kids in a way that will make them want to be better human beings. Don't jeopardize that.

I think it would be fine but with all of those teachers sleeping with students in the news I'd be careful. Never be the only adult there, don't let the students see more of your house than need be, just be as professional as possible at all times, don't joke around with them about anything remotely "adult", don't show them your genitals, or ask them if they know what a glory hole is, or if they wanna try a rusty trombone etc....lol...jk.

I see no problem with it since you're treating it the same way you do all other bands. It's professional to give everyone the same deal. It never hurts to ask the principal or whoever at the school but I see no conflict with it.

I think this is a question that could be solved very easily if you ask the principal. If you're uncomfortable doing that then read through your employee handbook and get an idea there. OR, you could ask a lawyer...try posting on the legal part of yahoo.
