The diet you're talking about is commonly referred to as the "BARF" (Bones And Raw Foods) diet. No, I'm not kidding ;)....

Here is a good site to answer some common questions:

Just Google "BARF diet" and you get plenty of links. It is a great diet, most dogs do extraordinarily well on it....HOWEVER you must do your research and make sure you feed the diet CORRECTLY. It is not just raw meat alone, you need to incorporate a variety of ingredients to make sure the dog gets the proper balance of protein, amino acids, and vitamins.

It can be costly and time-consuming to prepare, especially for large dogs. But I know people with a houseful of large dogs who feed BARF successfully- of course it helps if you're good friends with the neighborhood butcher. If you decide to feed your dogs the BARF diet, definitely do LOTS of research, and join a discussion list relating to the topic, where you can get assistance and guideance.

I've been feeding a raw food diet to my dogs for 15 years. You need to do some studying and read everything you can find so you can learn to do it well. Join one of Yahoo's raw feeding email groups.

One of my favorite websites is: http://www.eastwooddanes.com/Getting-Started-101.htm

it talks a bit about finding less expensive sources for meat.

I know that I could not feed my 4 large dogs a high quality kibble as inexpensively as I feed raw. Right now my primary meat sources are:

Turkey: on sale for 27 cents a lb.
scraps and bones from venison and elk- Free from my butcher
ground meat- scrap meat ground with organ meat.. 59 cents a lb from my butcher if I buy 100 lbs at a time.
chicken backs (to help with the ratio of 10-15% bone to meat- turkey and ground meat don't have a high enough ratio) 47 cents a lb

Do your research and good luck!

It is the rare veterinarian that will tell you raw meat or ANY bones (raw or cooked from any mammal) are safe for a dog to eat and they are the experts. There is not a single credible study that reaches any other conclusion. If you love your dog, just say no!

BARF is the best diet for dogs, but it is cost and labor intensive. I know some large dog breeders who simply buy the chicken quarters, freeze them and hand a frozen leg/thigh combo to the dog to gnaw down. With small dogs, you would have to downsize.
