Ok, I work in a small Optometry business that only has 3 employees, the Optometrist/Owner, a Trainee and myself, and I'm only getting $29,000 Aus. dollars a year. Someone's suggested I apply for a job with a building company earning +$40,000 a year. I really would like to try to go for it, but I feel I am obligated to my current employer.

I feel he deserves more than a quick letter of resignation and 2 weeks notice, especially this time of year. Does anyone have any advice on some ways I could go about it?

We all have to go where the money is. A two week notice is fine. After all you aren't just up and quitting on him with no notice. If it bothers him that much he will give you a raise and if he doesn't then it just "c u later"!

Since there are only three employees, I agree that a letter is a bit formal. Jobs are not exactly easy to get at this time and some of them are not exactly pleasant and may not fit your need. I think you should talk to your employer first and see if you could get a raise. State the tasks you are responsible for and any "extras" that you take care of for the business. Tell him you appreciate your chance to work with him but that you really need to consider something that will provide better pay. See what the response is to that and then if you still want to leave, ask what amount of time he would feel was fair for you to give as your notice. And even if the talk doesn't go as well as you'd like, remember to thank him for his time. I think it's always a bit frightening to quit one job before you're sure of a better one.

Here's what I'd do. I'd go apply to that other company. Tell your other boss that you had done so. Make an agreement with him that you'd stay until they hire a replacement for you or for four weeks (which ever comes first). Ask him if you can keep your job if the other one doesn't go through.

On the other-hand there is much to say about loyalty. You may not get the better pay and the benefits you seek but, if his business starts to take off, you get the satisfaction of being part of a great thing.

If you're working for a small firm, and you know the other job is secure, I would ask the other position for a start date, and give your current employer as much time as possible. The longer of a notice you can give him, the more appreciative he'll be. If he's a good employer, he'll be happy for your new opportunity, if he's not, then he probably didn't deserve the respect you're trying to show him.

Good for you for being responsible and caring. Just make sure the job is secured, then do the best you can.

Yes. Do not quit without actually securing new employment. And don't worry about your current employer, he understands the ways of the world, and believe it or not you ARE replaceable! If you do get the new job, make sure you thank him for the opportunity he's given you and just be honest about your reasons for leaving. That and two weeks notice is way more than a lot of employers end up with!

Don't show up for work answer your phone or have any contact for 2 weeks, then call your boss and tell him:
"notice that I have not been at work?"
yes, you have not been here for 2 weeks! he exclaims.
"thats my 2 week notice" HAHAHA
The best policy is not the above, but to sit down and be open with your employer. I do recommend that you have another job securely in hand. "Don't let the right hand know what the left one is up to" is good advice. I have seen and experienced "payback" from employers. So, live and learn... not to keep all your eggs in one basket. Look out for number 1 (yourself).

Sit down and talk to your employer and thank him/her for the opportunity but be honest with them and tell them that you need to make more money. Offer to help find and train your replacement providing you know some people that you can trust to do a good job and are willing to learn the job. Offer to fill in when you can until they get the help they need. Good luck with your career pursuits:>)

Don't slap yourself to be nice. Give notice before you have the job and you might be unemployed. Never, ever give notice until you are ready to leave, because it is common for employers to fire people immediately once they give notice.
