Question: What is the best thing to do with fallen leaves, instead of burning them?

Question Details:

Deleted Answer: ASK ANY TREE they have been dealing with fallen leaves for millions of years ,so one can assume that they know best. A tree in its life time produces most of its own soil with the leaves it discards . They rot and turn to compost under ,what is called the drip line ,the outer circumference of its crown. The leaves conserve the humidity and under the humid even temperature cover develop the earth worms . The worms eat the rotting leaves and with the micro organisms breakdown the leaves adding their wastes and produce the best compost know on this planet , That is why forest soil is so rich ,but it is not very deep depending on the age of the forest . The leaves that drop during the whole year only produce a cover of compost a few millimeters thick. So if you rake

all the leaves together and put them under a tree ,its like a 4 course dinner for them ,and the tree will be very happy with you . And if it is a fruit tree ,it will produce more fruits or nuts . The cover also stops the ground from drying out ,prevents wind and water erosion , as well as stopping weeds from developing . If you have a garden use them as mulch, and put the leaves around the plants . To burn the leaves on the other hand adds to air pollution and is a big waste of an important natural resource.

"this answer was deleted ,has yahoo come out of the closet where their Environmental concerns lie?"

The more likely option seems that specific people are targeting pro environment answers which are automatically deleted. And posters who post consistently in favour of environmental actions are also likely to attract reports for obvious reasons.

I find it unlikely that yahoo are specifically chose to delete this answer because of its corporate views, as it could very easily choose not to have an environmental section, and could be much more aggressive in its behaviour towards posters it disagrees with, as it is under no obligation to host opinions from posters it wishes to discourage.

I'm quite happy to entertain the idea that certain lobbies are looking to suppress information posted onto forums, but in this instance alone, for reasons outlined, I would favour the idea of political and ideological reportniks ahead of action being taken by yahoo.

It was and remains a good answer. Thanks for keeping the message out there.

I am at a loss it sounds like a perfectly good enviro answer to me I don't even rake leaves or grass I mow so all the trimmings etc. go toward the base of the tree and I leave it at the edge of the drip line, retards the grass which suffocates the tree growth too.

However being the contrarian that I am I get "reported" all the time it's obvious to me that others just didn't like my answer irregardless of validity.

And Yahoo obviously doesn't evaluate or consider sources that back up answers. I can only assume the robot just jerks it automatically. The one time I asked YA to evaluate I never got a response.

I personally would consider it a flaw in my personality if I ever "reported" anything short of outright severe abuse or misbehavior.

Then too somebody may have just accidently hit the wrong "flag"

It really puzzles me what gets deleted on yahoo.

Leaves are great. For the most part, they rot away very quickly. We never rake up our leaves. The only thing we do is keep them out of gutters, and off the cement walkway where they get too slimy. Slimy means they are rotting fast.

They even get slimy in this dry desert are I live in. My goats love to eat them.

Hubby bought our house from his parents. They kept the lawns perfectly manicured, and always raked up the leaves, ect.

I keep the grass much longer, and let the leaves rot where they fall. It now takes less water over the summer to keep our lawn green (lawns here are a vital rangefire protection break), and the grass is much greener. They use to dump chemicals. I allow nature to fertilize...cost less, and works way better than any chemical!

A trees root system generally extends as much and as wide into the ground as the branches above. A tree is almost mirror immaged of itself by the roots underground.

So when the leaves fall, they fall in the area under the tree...where it needs it the most, to help feed the roots. Natures automatic fertilizer system!

Very often I think humans get too big for their britches, thinking they can come up with better and more efficent ways of doing things, than nature has already come up with.

I think the Ginkgo tree is about the most perfect tree. The Ginkgo tree will usually loose all of it's leaves in one day, actually just a matter of hours. Whump, and they are all on the ground fertilizing next years growth. Ginkgo trees have been around 270 million years. Humans have been around about 5 million years. The Ginkgo tree has had a few million more years to become perfect and "smarter," than humans. Isn't it funny that the Ginkgo tree is the one we use to make suppliments to improve our memmories?

I've never burned leaves, but greatly appreciate the information that you've provided us, I will pass it on and share this with as many people as I can.

About Y!A, don't expect a response, they're incompetent at dealing with these kinds of matters, I don't mean to be harsh, but time and time again, they've proven so.
Perhaps it would be best to post this continuously (if deleted again), despite the posters who apparently have issues with the conservation/protection of our environment.

Once again, thank you. :-)

I haven't tried to figure out the reporting system. Maybe someone is gaming it. Have you figured out how many alter-ego's Mr. Jell-O has? By the way, he just added me to his blocked list. I'll just keep posting the truth. If the system here breaks down I'll just go back to real life.
