Many believe that during the three days between Christ's death and his resurrection that he descended to "Sheol," the Hebrew "place of the dead," to preach the Gospel to those who had already died.
This belief comes about for several reasons. The Hebrew word for "grave" is the same word used for "Sheol." So translators have often wondered if the original authors of Scripture intended a double meaning (as they often did) when they said that Christ was in "the grave" for three days.
The fifth line of The Apostle's Creed, a common statement of Christian faith thought to have been written as early as 700 AD, states: "He descended into hell."
This idea that Christ went and preached to the dead is supported by passages in Scripture such as Zechariah 9:11, which states "As for you, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will free your prisoners from the waterless pit." It is thought that the profit is speaking of Christ here. Also, 1 Peter 3:19 and 4:6 both refer to Jesus preaching the Gospel to those who have died.
It is also worth mentioning that we often use the word "hell" as a synonym for the Hebrew "Sheol," but that really isn't accurate. Hell, as defined by Scripture, is a place in which those who had no relationship with God are destined to spend eternity after the day of judgment. So it could be argued that until the day of judgment, no one is in hell. Perhaps they are just in a sort of holding area, which is more like the Hebrew idea of Sheol, or the place of the dead. Sort of like God's waiting room, where you wait to hear your "diagnosis." :)

He preached in hell for three days and rose to heaven. That must have been really painful. I wonder which was worse, the cross or hell.
Maybe that's all symbolic. Maybe they're saying that he figuratively went to hell by dying on the cross and preventing us from going to hell. If he literally did go to hell, it's one more reason to appreciate what he did for us.

Upon Jesus' death, He was removed from the crucifix and placed into a tomb. Therefore, we can conclude, that Jesus went to the tomb after He died. In other words, Jesus went to "hell" upon dying (read it in the King James Bible, Book of Acts, chapter 2, verse 27 ... for proof).

Before the death of Jesus and His resurrection, departed souls went to either hades or Abraham's Bosom (remember the rich man and lazarus). Jesus preached to those in hades, then led those who were in Abraham's Bosom to heaven.

He also released the souls who were in limbo and opened the gates of heaven. No mortal was in heaven before Jesus died. His Sacrifice opened the gates to us humans. :)

I'm going to believe that Jesus didn't descend to Hell. Why, because I believe that JESUS is the son of GOD.
