Little bit of both. Like any other kind of gambling, knowing the odds and calculating your chances is a skill. But since a lot of it is out of your hands, it's luck.

I have considered a lot in the last 2 years - can you make yourself a better bettor. I believe you can. Fantasy Baseball at ESPN (which is nightly) to learn that Hideki Matsui and Ichiro Suzuki hit lefties well and then pick them against lefty (a counter intuitive thing lefty vs. lefty) can help you. Same with Nascar -- drivers who do better on short tracks or in restrictor plate races.

it is a blend because one has to know probabilities, for example: the probability of the 49ers beating the Patriots. or the lakers losing.
if one knows what is probable to happen because of stats, how a team has been playing, and what's what and who's who. its more of a skill. but it blends with luck because an underdog rising up to the moment and capitalizing example.the 49ers beating the patriots by a field goal.
