My 10-month old fox terrier is house broken but once in a while he pees at the wrong place (like on his towel or in the middle of the living room), normally it happens when we tell him "no" on sthg or when we have to keep him in the bathroom while we go out.

We have 2 views on this (1) He is throwing a tantrum, (2) He gets nervous from the scolding or leaving he just wets himself. (He normally keeps his pee pee in coz he doesn't like going into the bathroom to pee. As bathroom = lonely place). In sum, is dog capable of having tantrums or are we just portraying ourselves on them?

If a dog experiences frustration and is not good at self control, he can throw a tantrum like a little kid. In this case, however, it sounds like your dog is not fully house trained.

Dogs see pee differently than humans and chances are that he goes because he really doesn't understand that he should never go inside the house or because he simply cannot hold it for whatever reason. If he pees in the house when you are absent, he might think that he can pee in the house but only when you are absent. If you see it after the fact and get upset, he may think that you just get upset out of the blue.

Dogs create strange and erroneous beliefs because humans are not always clear and consistent. You can review his house training and see if he is getting out often enough and for long enough periods of time. If you are using puppy pads in the house, I would get rid of them and have him go outside exclusively.

I know dogs are capable if rage. I have seen quite a few dog predated animal carcases that had extreme overkill. Sometimes a hunting dog just goes overboard on a kill. So if their capable of rage then their capable of throwing a tantrum.

Sounds like your dog is showing separation anxiety. He's not so much throwing a tantrum as he is doing things to get attention (negative attention, if that's all he can get).

If it's necessary for you to lock your dog in the bathroom to keep him from peeing/pooping then he is definitely being left alone for too long.

I wouldn't call it a tantrum so to speak. But dogs will act out. They do it for the same reason people do, to get attention. Positive or negative...to a dog it is still attention. The best thing to do is to put the dog back in a crate for a while (if you did the whole crate training thing, probably the most effective). this will do two things: it will keep the dog from acting out, and it will separate it from the family. Dogs want to be with their family/pack, so they will learn to do what is right so that they are not "crated".

Yes, I think they can be very emotional and smart beings. The next time he pees in the wrong place try this. Talk to him like you are very disappointed in him. Really let down. 'Now Rover, why'd you do that? You know better than that'. But dont yell at him. Then, dont look at him for a couple of hours. If he sees you look at him shake your head in shame and disapointment and look away. Dont play with him. Then after 2 or 3 hours of this(if you can punish him that long--it aint easy), go sit on the floor with him, love him up and talk about it. 'It's okay boy, you know I love ya. Tell him you worry about him but you dont like it when he pees on the flloor, etc. Then make that spitting type noise in his ear, tickle him and get him to smile. So, all is well until the next time. But, you have to be consistent in this till he gets over it. It takes 3 to 4 times. Good Luck.

When my Crested was a puppy he would throw temper tantrums. He didnt go pee somewhere.. but he would flop himself down and whine and fuss much like a 2 year old human throwing a temper tantrum.

Dogs can defiantly throw tantrums and they can really make sure you know it!! 10 mos is still pretty young..he may not quite have the housebreaking thing down yet. He should be better about it when he reaches full maturity.

I personally think they do but I took my Doxie to a dog whisper and she told me that they do not have that mind set. All I know is that when i would leave he would poop on my pillow. That was every single time and it was just my pillow. Explain that. She told me it was a dominance thin and that he was smelling me but he sure never pooped on me when he smelled me. Have you tried a crate instead of the bathroom? As soon as i crate trained all the problems seemed to stop. Maybe if he is in the crate and out in the open he would not feel so nerves.

Some times I think that they can.

I've seen them pee on a bed of someone who they don't like.

I've seen them turn away from someone who slighted them.

My dog refused to look at or be in the room with my roommate, because she went camping with her family and didn't take him. And he knew it because he saw her putting the ice chest in her car. He had nothing to do with her for over 2 weeks. A present of some fried chicken finally won him over

And yes we do give them human emotions. But I know they love.

probably he pees when scolded out of submission this is
what dogs do to show you YOU are the boss and fear
the bathroom is a HUGE lonely space for doggie when you
are out
my girlfriend went thru this with a lassaphso it tore up her
bathroom eventually
try putting it in a kennel I have a small plastic cat carrier
and my Yorkie loves to nap there and be placed there
as he is "off duty" when he hangs out on the couch he never
really sleeps/naps he is alert as he thinks he is a watchdog
but in his little kennel he is off duty and sleeps like a rock
This is same Yorkie when he gets mad at me will hike
his scrawny skinny yorkie leg like he is gonna pee to make
me jump up and give him attention he does not pee but
he gets my full attention he is one spoiled baby boy.
good luck
