Why do you want to repulse your family? I don't get it.

It is a nice sentiment but I would wait a while. I know you consider yourself old enough but really we all change a lot between 18 and our mid-20s; our thoughts and feeling change a lot. If you still want a tat when you are a little older, then go for it, but I think it is a little early when you are 18.

This is just my opinion of course. I don't have anything against tattos but a few people I have known have regretted them later.

Do you have any idea how bloomin' painful it is to get a tattoo? Arrrrgh! No kidding! And it can get infected!

The second thing is that the ingredients in the tattoo ink are NOT regulated... and they are known to have everything including cadmium, lead, aluminum and what-not. This stuff isn't necessarily going to be harmless vegetable dyes. Probably why a lot of people go through infections.
You don't want to put a bunch of potentially toxic substances next to your central nervous system... spine.

If you insist on getting a tatt... start with a very small one high up on your arm and gauge from that.

I'm all for tattoos, and don't think you should live in fear of regret... however, you should probably spend a very long time thinking about what you want to get and how big you want it. An entire back tattoo would be crazy for your first one, so perhaps think of how you could implement it in stages. Beyond having sentimental value, it should also look great, so spending extra time on design (even a few years) will be worth it.

No. As you know once you get a tatto it's there for life. What if you get married and your wife doesn't like it? Maybe she won't like looking at your parents everytime she sees your back.

If you really want the tattoo then go for it. It is your decision, not anyone elses. You are the one who is going to have to live with it. It sounds like your family means a lot to you. I think that is awesome. Just make sure that it is something that you really want and won't regret in the long run.

An emphatic NO. You do not want to do something that is so permanent and irreversible. Later on, you will regret it. They always do. Then, it is too late. More than that, do you know that it is very painful to be tattooed. Why subject yourself to such torture. Take care of yourself and your body. You are a wonderful young man/woman.
