The divine name is not entirely spelled out, not because of fear but out of respect. An observant Jew considers any manifestation of the divine name as a responsibilty for the one who writes or speaks it. Should the name be written on a piece of paper, what does it say if that paper should be dropped in a mud puddle or catch fire or be soiled or destroyed in some other way? If the name is spoken or sung, can one be sure one's voice won't crack or sneeze or cough in the middle of it? Respect for the name prevents one from rendering it fully and subjecting it to inadvertent indignity.

Its partially a Jewish thing. I also think some people use it to mean the deity followed by Jews, Christians and Muslims, as "God" generally implies a Christian bias.

Jewish people do it out of respect for the name of God. They do not want to even begin to think about taking the name of God in vain, so they avoid spelling it out when in reference to the true one almighty God.

Usually because it pisses off the hardcore Cristoholics. Just like the Muslims out there, they get upset when anybody disses their views.

They are trying to avoid taking a word in "vain" that in a Jewish or Christian context stands for the tetragrammaton. In other words, they are trying to show respect to God.

Practicing Jews are terrified to say God, because I guess it's too forward. It's amazing what irrational fear can do to people's minds.
