the Dr said it was possibly a type of yeast infection, gave me medicine to take....It helped while I was taking it, but two weeks later it was back. My tongue has a white coating on it and it stings and burns, this pretty well goes away with the medicine....It makes it very hard to cook as I can't taste salt or sugar hardly at all.....

Yes, the other answers are right: the white coating is the yeast fungus, candida albicans (otherwise known as thrush), which is common in babies' mouths, and you should see what medications could be contributing to it, especially antibiotics. This is because they kill the useful bacteria in our gut as well as the harmful ones, and this allows yeast organisms to thrive. You can take a supplement of lactobacillus acidophilus (often called prebiotics or probiotics) to help restore the balance in your gut. See the link below for further info.

Also discontinue all yeast-based foods, such as beer, wine, yeast bread (check the label), sugary foods including honey (doesn't matter what kind of sugar - yeasts love 'em all), pastries, and anything fermented. As far as possible eat only unprocessed foods, lots of fresh vegetables, especially greens, drink lots of plain water, and go easy on sugary fruits such as grapes. Eating plain yogurt with lactobacillus in it may also help.

It will probably take a couple of weeks to restore the balance of the bacilli in your mouth, but persevere and it will work.

(The chemical treatments such as Nystatin may help, but in my experience they will not remove the problem in the long term.)

Sounds like what is commonly known as thrush-a candida infection of the mucous membranes. If the medicine didn't cure it completely, your doctor should be investigating what is causing it to recur.
Some people seem to be colonized with yeast and have to eat a special diet, excluding all foods that are related to or prepared using fungi-you can find it on the internet under candida diet. But do work with your doctor-there may be something simpler you can try.

Are you taking any other medications? Steriods (both oral and inhaled) can cause repeated yeast infections in the mouth. Talk to your doctor and let him/her know that you did show improvement while on the medications. Nystatin is usually prescribed first then Diflucan can be given if Nystatin was not successful. Also if they retreat you, change your toothbrush midway through treatment then again at the end. Good luck!

I don't know if you are a drinker but alcohol can kill taste buds.
