The water quality in these areas is unpredictable. Can certain fruits be contaminated by the the local water supply?

Depends on the contaminants.

If the contaminants are human waste in the water, it would not affect the fruit.

But certain chemicals such as industrial wastes, it would send you straight to the hospital.

If the locals are eating them, then why not?

Though it's still warm in southern China, it's not the watermelon season. However, I have no problem eating watermelon bought in HK but not sure about Guangzhou.

o c'mon! it's not like what u thought!
if the fruits r contaminated how do e local ppl survive? and what's more, u r visiting the 2 most prosperous and modernised cities in china. just try to get fruits in the big supermarkets not from those street vendors.
relax n enjoy ur trip^^

I ate plenty of watermelon in HK and all sort of places in China and never had a problem.
